Fuck you going Tech for Mind Physical Play

I want to be clear on this. Are you saying "fuck you" to me? If so, why?

And what's Mind Physical Play? A band?

There is ZERO funk in the fucking song Purple Rain you moron. It's a ballad.

No, you're talking about someone else. Because Prince incorporates a variety of styles in his music, which heavily relies on funk. Playing "offbeat" is only one form of funk and while Prince doesn't utilize it that often, he has sometimes, more so in his live shows. Funk chords are played in a DANCEABLE style and are rooted in dominant 6ths, 7ths, 9ths and even minor 7ths & 11ths, as well as repeated groove-based rhythms and electric bass lines. These elements are smothered in almost all of Prince's songs. Playing "offbeat" does NOT strictly define funk.

I was refering to what you said earlier about Prince playing both dance and funk. Let me try a different approach. To me, Prince doesn't play funk music for reasons stated earlier. I understand what you're conveying with your definition of funk, however, those same characteristics can be applied to Talking Heads. I like their music, however as mechanical as it does sound, similarly to Prince. Would you consider them a funk band?

Stating, "Prince doesn't play funk", is like saying, "Metallica doesn't play metal." Holy jumping shit-balls, quit smokin' what you're smokin'.

As far as Talking Heads are concerned, they're a commercialized version of Roxy Music. And yes, some of their music can be considered funk...

even minor 7ths & 11ths,

What do you mean by "even"? Many of the all time funk jams are based on minor 7ths.

I was listing standard funk chords. Don't get all semantical.

downer mydnyte wrote:
Funk is about feeling, anyway. It's not about which chords you use. Funk can't be defined by chord types or notes. It's a state of mind. It's physical, too. How you play. The attack.

If particular chords, rhythms, beats and/or grooves don't define, or help to define a genre like funk, then I guess there's really no distinctions that can be made to define genres/sub-genres...

Actually, saying "Prince doesn't play pop", is more like saying, "Metallica doesn't play metal." I guess you and I have differences in opinion on funk music. Whatevs. I just don't as much enjoy the stale metronomic variation.

IMO

Funk and Funky are not equivalents. Funky is a percentage of Funk. Any cheezy band can be at least a bit Funky.
If something smells funky, looks funky, tastes funky, sounds funky, is funky, then it isn't quite right. It is a bit off.
The more Funky the music, the closer to being Funk. Uncut Funk. The Bomb.
Then there is Buddy Guy, who said that when he was growing up, they would say that they would play so funky they could smell it, and implied a sexual connotation. Does that bass, groove, tone, attitude, whatever get her hot?
If you guys are really gonna get out there with the definitions though, you gotta be able to factor in this one:

Fuck definitions. Do you think it's funky? Isn't that all that counts?

As you can see from my post on page two, I posted 2 pfunk albums that feature Bootsy quite heavily (every track on the Horny Horns album) and a James Brown album.

Not that I don't appreciate your links!!
