Did you attend the ZPZ show at the Crest Theatre in Sacramento?

Dweezil and the band love reading your reviews.

Please do not post in this thread if you did not attend the show.

What a great show...to start i must say that the crest theater is a beautiful venue...the sound was perfect... i had the time of my life...one of the best shows ever...first off dweezel tells the crowd that people that have seen other shows this week will get some differant tunes and one of them is PACKARD GOOSE which i asked for in redding the night before.. i can't beleave it ! . also i asked for outside now but we;ll get to that later... he asked the crowd if they wanted billy the mountain and at first it was a tie between playing or not playing...then he asked again and everyone wanted it...so i now know how the band must feel hearing this song everynight...i've heard it three shows in arow...yet it ROCKED TONIGHT, it rocked everytime, but tonight it had the "OCTO-MOM " FLAVOR.. the show started with purple lagoon into A HIGH ENERGY ZOMBY WOOF... wind up working and san berdino had the crowd moving and grooving the pacard goose was played excellent i love that tune.. MUSIC IS THE BEST....dweezel then tells us next is Why dont you do me right something about us asking where is that song from and ray kills this song it's heavy riffing and a fun song the part where they stop and wait for the crowd to love ray back is classic, ray turns and power sings back at the people good times...
Penguin, magic fingers, and carolina hard core ecstasy echoed though the canyons of my mind !!!! if thats not enough the band hits us with great versions of ROXY FLASHBACKS village of the sun, echidna's arf ' and don't you ever was that thing? straight from the WAY-BACK MACHINE ... jamie , joe, aaron, billy, ray, pete,DZ and scheila bring everything to these song ... then when youve had enough they throw BILLY THE MOUNTAIN at ya'll.... unreal
To start things up AGAIN we get JOE'S GARAGE
Outside Now was beyond word the song speaks for it's self...and did.... plus Ray's singing is beautiful ... the VAMP IS HYPNOTIC, then DWEEZEL SOLOING over it..get out of town charlie brown !!!... This song made me think of FRANK ... what a genius... i love this band.... every thing about this show was above par and then some...
then everyone in the band KICKED ASS!! with dupree's paradise and SOLO'S.... plus some CRAZY THING WHERE ALL THE BAND MEMBERS PLAYED DIFFERANT SONGS AT THE SAME TIME !!!! all i could say was ...what the hell just happened...Are YOU KIDDING... NO FRIENDS THE ZAPPA PLAYS ZAPPA BAND IS NOT KIDDING...from now on they are going to play this way,:therfore, every song will be played every night, there will be no request because nothing will be left out...
Next was torture and it never stops being a crowd pleaser... great song...
ENCORES peaches en regalia and cosmik debris... all masterfuly done and totally enjoyable...
THANK YOU THANK YOU... dweezel stayed and signed stuff for about ahour ...what a great guy... i talked with scheila and we may see CARMAN in santa rosa.... she signed every thing from tickets to HOT TOMALES BOXES ...She is so nice to talk with...there was so many great things about this show....i hope they play this venue again... not a bad seat in the house i was in KK 10 middle up ..all the people in my section were fun to be around.. i'am still jacked up and it's 5:20 in the morning... i must sleep and head out for the santa rosa show....plus eat at SAM'S AT PLAY CAFE best breakfast in sonoma county.... GOOD NIGHT ALL

First off, thanks to the band for putting on a GREAT show! I've seen more than two dozen concerts in my life so far ( Dream Theater, Rush, Van Halen, Toto, etc. . ) . But the Sacramento Zappa Plays Zappa show was the BEST!! I really appreciate getting a chance to thank Dweezil at the end of the night ( he even signed my CD ). The band really kicked HARD!!!. One request on the next visit: Would love to hear " Alien Orifice " pop up sometime! But the set list from last night was PERFECT!! Thanks for Packard Goose ( !!!!!! ). Take care all. P.S. I was surprised at the number of people who didn't know Zappa Plays Zappa was touring with Dream Theater this summer for Progressive Nation 2009! Check dreamtheater.net in the news section for more details!! Peace!!

Howdy Howdy,
I knew it was going to be a special evening. Arriving early we spotted the 2x ZpZ Buses and equipement truck out back of the Crest Theater. I couldn't have asked for much more than a giant pile of JBL's for sound, Dweezil and band playing Frank's "earfood" at full blast and japanesse food in my belly, my brain in a cloud of smoke. I could almost say if I died tomorrow, bury me face up so you could see my smile as my life would be complete after this ZPZ show last night. Pretty much got most of Frank's albums and stuff so last night I was just a singing & a drumming to all the songs. You know what really touched my heart last night was thought of this mom brought her young son to the show, VIP seats too. I think I seen them getting a drum head autographed after the show. What great exposure to the new generation, a expansion of the mind sort of. The "awe" look of youngster's first live ZAPPA show was priceless, knowing that expirence will continue to last throughout his life setting a musical level that'll be hard to exceed. So off I go seeking the pretty notes, chords that create emotion, and movies you never forget.
Remember, make friends and keep'em, later Don
P.S. Thanks again Dweezil and Band for keeping Frank's Great Music ALIVE for all of us to enjoy.

wow... DZ and the band KICKED ASS... the crest theater was a great venue, very intimate. I was sitting about 10 rows from the back and the sound was great! I could see everything, and I felt like the band could actually hear me as I was applauding. I counted at least 3 or 4 standing ovations. After the show the band members interacted with people in the adience, sighing stuff, ect. Dwez stayed and talked to people and sighed t-shirts and dvds and such, I was eight feet in front of him waiting my turn, although I didn't bring anything for him to sighn I wanted to shake his hand and tell him
how gratefull I am to him for making his fathers music come alive again! It's like Steve Via said on the dvd "There is nothing else like it in the world"
I didn't actually get a chance to tell him that in person because I thought he must have been exhausted and there was alot of other people in front of me. So I am saying it here Thank you DZ! As for the show itself in alot of ways it was better then the dvd if that's possible, the band was so freaking tight, but at the same time really loose. the set list was great! Dweez your solo in packard goose was unbeliveable as was all the rest of your solos, you are trully your dads son a very gifted guitar player/mucian. Thanks for playing "Carolina hard core ectacy" the last time I heard that done live was buy your dad at the Santa Cruz civic back in 1984. Pete's bass solo was off the hook! Aarons keyboard solo was so cool! Jamie's solo Rocked! Billy does so much he was incredable! Joe I have always felt like ZAPPA drummers had the hardist job, how do you remember all those dead stops, the differant time signatures, ect, you are great! Scheila you are so talented, keyboards, harmonica, flute, kazoo, vocals and dancing, and you look so good doing it,
buy the way are you single? And then there is Ray white.. great vocals, great improv when DZ's guitar fretted out, also great solo in "cosmic debris"
Well I have to run, Once again THANK YOU ALL!!! for putting on such a great show! One more thing PLEASE PLEASE come to sacramento again.
Peace and love, ZAPPA FOREVER!

When I was a teenage kid back in the 70's I used to crank Zappa back in my parents house to the great disliking of my dad and the astonishment of some of my friends. Most of the kids my age would listen to mainstream dance-style music and thought I had a bizarre taste. But of course, they wouldn't listen to Hendrix, Genesis, Jeff Beck or Led Zeppelin or any of the other bands I'd dig out either.
Anyway, I was fascinated early on by the combination of Jazz-fusion style music, amazing skill-level of the musicians and FZ politically oriented humor. For some odd reason I never got around to see Frank live, despite he was a core figure in my early music interest.

I have been noticing Dweezil and his ZPZ venture and started thinking about attending a show to experience something as close to the real thing as you could get. Well, last night he and the band were in Sac which is where I live so I no longer had much of a choice :)

Dweezil, if you or any of your band-mates read this; I go to concerts, large and small, fairly frequently but all I can say is that what you did yesterday is the best I have seen since I cannot remember when!! Absolutely sublime renditions of some of my favorite songs. I was considering shouting "Zombie Woof" before you started playing but it wasn't necessary... perhaps you had psychic powers since you started out with that song!

I feel no need to repeat what songs were played when and how since that seems to be well covered by others in the reviews. Instead I would like to say that I was mesmerized by the skills of you and your fellow musicians and I was especially intrigued by Sheila and her saxophone playing.
What added greatly to the show was the fact that you all seemed to enjoy playing and I saw many smiles from everyone in the band. It is rare to find really sympathetic artists these days and the way you interacted with the audience was just something well beyond the usual.
I have often thought of I'd dare start a conversation if I found an artist that I like next to me on a bar stool somewhere, but if it ever happens to be you, your next beer is on me, end of discussion!

To top everything off Dweezil and Sheila stuck around on stage after the encore to chat with people and sign authographs. Shame on both of you for ruining my five-dollar bill - now I have to frame it instead of buying a beer with it :)

Once again thank you for an incredible show and hope to see you soon again!

Our third ZPZ show was last night at The Crest . About everything has already been said , so I would like to add that I saw Frank live 10 times , and this band that Dweezil has put together would make Frank's high standards anytime . Listening to Dweezil's guitar solos are perfect to Frank's playing . Actually , in my opinion , the only band I ever saw with Frank that was better than this group was the Roxy & Elsewhere band of the mid 70's. This show is unbelievable . Can't wait till the next . Thanx to Dweezil for signing my wife's Suzy Creamcheese T-Shirt . I'm sure if Frank were still with us , he'd be having fun with OctoMom , too . Everyone has song requests , but I'm going to make a venue request . The Crest is one of the beautiful , classic theatres with great sound . My other ZPZ shows were in theatres , also . Some of like to dance to Frank's music . How about a show at The Fillmore , a venue Frank played many times , so we can dance . Thanx , David .

The second in two nights for me & my 10 year old son. I was unsure if a 10 year old would fit in with what could have been played and spoken, but the Sac crowd (and Redding, for that matter) made us feel right at home, with others commenting repeatedly that they wish they could have brought their kids. As a musician of 20+ years and my son just starting, we were both kids in the candy store. Great venue and fine audience. Thanks to Dweezil & Co. again for a top notch performance. Must confess that the Sac show was superior to Redding, not only because of the smaller and more appealing venue, but because of the new additions of Packard Goose and Outside Now. Thanks to DZ and the gathered crowd of autograph seekers for allowing my son and I to work our way to the front to get an autograph & guitar pick from Dweezil (the name on the pick was Gary Coleman, which just ended my night with another great laugh). I know my kid is a new fan because he now wants my FZ CD collection. Great set, great fans, great venue, great googally-moogally! Please, please, please--come back soon! (FZ &ZPZ) MUSIC IS THE BEST!

Just wanted to thank you, Dweezil, and the rest of the band, for coming to our little city and treating us to some amazing music! This is my second time to the show - Berkely last year - please come back again! Also, thanks very much for signing my guitar strap - (I swear my strat plays better for it!) - and for being so generous to all of us for the whole show. What an amazing set - what an incredible lot of guitar work! Dweezle - put out some more music! I love the Tour de Frank - but I would come to a show of your material too - another CD in the works? Scheila - wow! What rare beauty you are! To all the band - Thank You! Have fun in Japan - see you next year - would not miss it!

My fifth ZpZ show and it was a good one, but there was something about this show that lacked that certain spark. I'm not sure if it was because Dweezil was bugged because of all the requests (he did seem upset and it would be impossible to be able to play FZ's whole catalog), or if the band was tired (lots of shows). Don't get me wrong, the band was tight and it was a great evening, but I have been more impressed at the other 4 shows I have seen. Also, I just don't get Billy The Mountain, but Sacramento voted and they wanted that song.... I like how Dweezil has the crowd vote on certain songs.

One bonus of the Dweezil getting all those requests was when he had everyone in the band play a different song. It was fun!

I really did enjoy the sound check. It was great to see the band practicing and it was a real treat to hear Schelia play a little Oh No during some down time.

The venue is / was great, my only complaint was the volume was a little high.

I'm looking forward to the next US tour!
I'm not sure if it was because Dweezil was bugged because of all the requests (he did seem upset and it would be impossible to be able to play FZ's whole catalog), or if the band was tired (lots of shows).
A wonderful show in every way but I must agree somewhat with BongoBob's quote. I actually may have contributed to Dweezil's annoyance right up front by yelling "Dong Work for Yuda" after he mentioned that the band would play "Packard Goose." I really wasn't requesting "Dong..." as much as I was blurting out a reference to another, albeit kinda silly song, from Joe's Garage (hey, not a bad groove though, and could be worked into a "Have I Offended Someone?" type medley). In all honesty I was a bit punch drunk with giddiness over the awesome seats (second row "balcony") my wife and I had secured. I was pleased that Dweezil heard me, and responded, even if not too positively. Oh well, I hope that he was at least somewhat amused.

Dweezil was also obviously perturbed later in the show when he mentioned the "illegal" video taping he saw going on.

This was my third ZPZ show (been to shows in '06 and '07) and so I've come to expect Dweezil to exhibit a very reserved stage presence -- all the while shreddin' the bajeezus outa the guitar and not missing a single note. How the heck does he do it?. Anyway, he seemed even more "relaxed," possibly tired, this evening. It didn't hurt the show one bit, in my opinion. The small venue was wonderful. Please please please come back to the Bay Area and Northern California, ZPZ!!

Oh, and can anyone set me straight on why the web downloads and the guitar giveaway didn't happen? Had that promotion simply expired?

Saw Frank live three times, first in '76, then again in '80 and then again around '85 or '86. It is so wonderful to be able to have this type of live music experience again via ZPZ. I wish I could have gone to all of the Northern California shows. Maybe next time...
