Did you attend the ZPZ show at the Tivoli in Brisbane?

Dweezil and the band love reading your reviews.

Please do not post in this thread if you did not attend the show.

Tivoli show was terrific once the crowd got into it. And the catalyst for that was a man-voiced woman yelling for "Baby Snakes" or "Pancakes." Gawd it was annoying but the band found it funny and once they did the crowd did too. The crowd was quiet & polite to a fault up to that point which was probably 30-45 minutes into the 2 1/2 hour set. The band mocked the yelling out for Baby Snakes and Pancakes for the rest of the set. We were treated, according to the band, to "Titties + Beer" (not on the set list) for the first time since a Halloween show in NYC. Band seemed a bit hollow because of the missing players. But that hollow slowly removed itself as the night progressed. As this was my first live ZPZ show, (I devoured the DVD weeks ago in preparation for this night) I was only distracted because the band kept mentioning the missing elephants in the room. I wish "San Ber'dino" had been on the set list, but no one wants to hear me whine for a song too! Show stealer of the night was not a song but another drunk lady who casually crawled on stage with DZ's approval. This lady set the crowd alight with her shimmy and stole the spotlight during "Peaches en Regalia." Not to be outdone some five other younger girls joined during "Cosmik Debris" and except for one they just white-people danced. One (not so young) had to push her luck and go for the keyboards and later a Strat - she was politely removed. I was front row in the balcony using my point-and-shoot to record "Peaches" but ended up getting the entire dancing ladies episode. Haven't watched the 20 minutes of footage yet. I'm not expecting it to be worthy but if it is watch this space for more info on that... It will be a long wait to see ZPZ again regardless of the duration. After the show I got a set list from the mixing board guy - THANKS AGAIN FOR THAT - and went down front to get it signed by the band. What a treat that was. Classy and unassuming move.

SET:

1. Apostrophe
2. Why Don'tcha Do Me Right
3. Penguin in Bondage
4. Village of the Sun
5. Echidna's Arf
6. Don't You Ever Wash That Thing
7. Magic Fingers
8. Tell Me You Love Me
9. Mammy Anthem
10. Pound for a Brown - Band Solos
11. Yellow Snow
12. Titties + Beer monologue (not on set list)
13. St. Alfonzo's Pancake Breakfast
14. Son of Orange County
15. More Trouble Everyday
ENCORE:
16. Peaches en Regalia
17. Cosmik Debris
18. Willie the Pimp

Thank you for coming back out to Brisbane so soon after your last trip down under. My wife and i caught your show at the Tivoli last night, great stuff! We saw your previous Brisbane show at the Qpac but i'd say the smaller Tivoli venue makes for a better night in terms of sound and atmosphere. Sitting back with a frosty brew being mesmerised by the band is quite a treat.

Great song selection, loved how you opened with the extended bass solo playing of Pete Griffin on Apostrophe. I'm a big fan of Frank's 70's era so your set list revolving around that period is awesome. The Tittes and Beer monologue was pretty funny, as was the Baaaaaby Snaaaaakes, Paaaaancaaaaakes improv. Loved the sound of Jamie Kime's vamping.

You are always so gracious towards your fans, letting them come up to dance and then that meet and greet you do at the end you handle very well. Almost losing your white Fender by that crazy red headed lady was a bit of a worry, good thing your crew was on hand to save it.

Thank you for keeping the music alive.

Paula and Tony - Noosa Heads

THANK YOU AGAIN for coming back!! I saw the QPAC show last time as well as Byron Bay on Friday. I hope Australia continues to be included on future tours - I know bringing the show down here ain't cheap. Most of the show has been described pretty well above, great stuff!

Scheila and Jamie's dance off was hilarious to watch. It is such a treat to hear these tunes played with so much skill and respect. Just awesome.

We'll keep showing up any time you feel like putting on shows over here!

Here's to the next chapter of ZPZ!

Thanks to Dweezil, band and crew, you gotta thank the crew! (Ex LX Tech!) Have so far seen all your Brissy shows to date and will continue to do so as long as you keep coming to Oz, I mean that.
Re Tivoli gig, must admit I was slightly disapointed not seeing Napoleon and Steve in the lineup as they really contributed so much to the show last time, but hey, it was and always will be so special having Dweezil here in Brissy performing Franks astounding music.
Dweezil, were starved here down under for this caliber of music so please keep returning, hoping your time here is memorable and of course enjoyable, Cheers, Ian

Hi all, and thanks for coming back to australia! I was SO dissapointed I missed out last time, and there were two shows in brisbane!! Venue is nice, the stage is nice, the gear is great, the players are all VERY adept! YES!, and I understand that three key players had left the band only previously. What I DON'T understand, is why doesn't Dweezil doesnt sing?? After all these years, doesn't he know the words to any songs, let alone all of them? So they had no lead singer? Is that any reason to torment us with 27 solos?? Nice, but boring. Even FZ stated that he would probably fail a vocal audition to his own band, and half the time he doesnt even sing, its just talking! So why didnt we have some fun tunes, rather than trying to blow us all out- I figured out after 2 minutes what we were in for. We had like, 3 songs sung, and by the drummer. Well ok, he knew the words, but even I sing better than that. Everyone plays like a mother, which is great, solos were nice, and the virtosus parts were great to see done so well, but honestly if I closed my eyes, I reckon I heard like 5 minutes of authentic FZ, and the rest sounded like some hotted up wet band doing whatever.. And how come theres no 'sexual harrasment in the work place'? If your gonna start soloing all night, try that. I dont see how not having a keyboard player really limits it, Im sure the pianos melody line could be ripped off. I couldnt care less if it was played on a piano or a guitar or whatever, as every concert of FZ was different, what are you trying to copy? Dissapointing really, DZ has the look, the accent even, how hard would it be to do some singing? I cant believe after all these years he doesn't sing, and he, of all people wants to put out THE authentic FZ tribute band? When I saw 5 mics on stage I was anticpiating big chorus 'n all. And now I read all about the 'other bands not doing it authentic enough, maybe even hurting themselves in the process (!), I start to wonder if theres any bigotry going around. Geez, put on a moustache and have some fun. And Ryko's "Strickly Commercial" is simply wonderful too! The final word? If I had never heard of FZ before, that gig would not tempt me to go and buy anything.. Please dont head bang while playing the bass, is it any wonder at all really? your sincerly, a devoted FZ fan!!!

Was at the Tivoli and was thoroughly entertained. As for the lack of a dedicated lead singer, to me it was not much of an issue. I was there to hear Zappa's music played by a group of highly skilled musicians. I was introduced to Frank's music by the lyrics of Titties and Beer and Jewish Princess, but over the years it was the notes that inspired me and made me one of those dedicated Frank fans. I learned a lot about American politics from Frank's lyrics, but really loved the Shut Up and Play Your Guitar and Guitar albums. The Yellow Shark is brilliant. It's all about the notes to me, the lyrics are secondary.
Had a great night at the Tivoli and look forward to seeing you guys/girl again in the future.
Paaaaaaannnnncaaaaaaakes.

My favourite gig of all time - and that's many hundreds of them including FZ in 70's. That's probably due to the combination of the excellence of the playing and the venue itself - The Tiv is my all time favourite venue and I have moved around a lot. Loved the difference between the line up and sounds from the 07 tour and this one. Also loved the statement that DZ will be touring OZ regularly. It is brilliant to see such a great guitarist in his own right tackling such complex and challenging music so well. Apostrophe was a solid opener and the set just grew from there. - For me the highlight was Son of Orange County - great solo DZ. Please hit us with 'Little House I Used to Live In' on a future visit. Thanks also for your patience post gig as well - it is great to meet you and chat - even if briefly - you are a real pro.

Thank you, Dweezil and co, for another amazing show!! I was at the last Brisbane show at QPAC and I gotta say, this one was even better, even though I wasn't as familiar with some of the songs this time around.

To the Zappmeister person who voiced their annoyance at the lack of Dweezil singing...perhaps YOU should put on a moustache and start your own Zappa tribute band if you think you could do a better job, eh? Dweezil is not Frank. He never tried to be Frank. He has no NEED to try and be Frank. I think any TRUE Frank fan would not have such opinions of his concert either.

But moving on...the band as always was absolutely AMAZING. My head would swell to 3 times its natural proportions if I could manage to play just ONE of those instruments on ONE single Frank song, and there you've got people like Scheila for instance playing not only the keyboard, but the saxophone AND singing as well!!

I personally didn't feel the need for any special guests. The devoted ZPZ band members were present and fantastic. I couldn't ask for a better show. It was with much hilarity that we observed the many girls dancing with Dweezil on stage and having a great time. I found the woman who started the whole thing was really funny and was a fun addition to the night.

However, that, uh..."person" who climbed up onto the stage last...when I saw this incredibly tall, skeletal and apparently quite elderly woman heading toward the stage, I thought OH MY GOD. RUN DWEEZIL, RUN!!!! I noticed Scheila's face when the person tried to play her keyboard. NOT HAPPY! Thankfully someone had the person quickly removed from the stage.

After the show, Dweezil and band members stayed back to chat to anyone who wanted to talk, and sign anything that was offered to be signed. I think this happens at every show, and it's really quite amazing how lovely Dweezil is to do this every time. I stupidly neglected to bring my camera or phone with me, but next time I will be sure to have a photo taken with Dweezil!!

Incidentally, on our walk back to the train station after the concert, we passed the "woman" in the street. I'm not sure what she was doing. She appeared to be standing and staring at a wall. I hastened my stride as we passed her. *shiver* lol

Come back soon, Dweezil!!!! Come to the Gold Coast as well, so we can go to that show as well!

PS. Thanks for signing my custom-made Duke of Prunes t-shirt!!
PPS. Our 6 month old kitten is named Dweezil, heheh!

This is feline Dweezil, my 6 month old Manx "son"...

Isn't he lovely? Just like the real Dweezil (although I'm sure human Dweezil doesn't relieve himself in the sink like my cat does)

What an amazing evening of aural wonderment! I saw ZPZ in Brisbane on the last tour and was absolutely blown away and so was thrilled when I heard you were touring down under again. I didn’t feel let down at all by the lack of “special guests”, I LOVED this stripped down “teenage rocking combo” version of ZPZ! The opening of “Apostrophe” and “Why Doncha Treat Me Right” really hit the spot and to me it was such a thrill to hear so many of the Roxy songs, especially “Echidna’s (Arf Of You) and “Son Of Orange County”. Despite being determined not to get all sentimental and teary this time around, “Peaches En Regalia” left me misty eyed.

If ZPZ is all about Frank’s music and keeping it alive and bringing it to new ears and into new eras then his music is in safe hands. I think Frank himself would have been very proud of the musicians on that stage and the magic they wove with his music. Everyone in the band was amazing but I really want to single out Scheila for special mention, you rock girl! By the way, it was also really great to see so many other female Frank fans in the audience! For too many years I felt I was in a minority group.

Dweezil, thank-you so much for your warmth and humility, it really means a lot to so many people that you take the time after the shows to chat and sign stuff. Keep up the good work and please continue to include Australia in your future tours. There is still so much more of Frank’s music I would love to hear live (Son Of Mr Green Genes, Inca Roads, The Duke of Prunes, Outside Now, Chunga’s Revenge just for starters-hint hint) so keep it happening. We love you!
