A night to remember! As usual the first couple of minutes were needed to find the right sound (and switching off the tuning gadget definitely helps) but then it was crisp and clear. It is hard to say what my favourite moment was but I think I’ll go for the Roxy set with “Village Of The Sun”, “Echidna’s Arf” and “Don’t You Ever Wash That Thing?” About two thirds through the lot came a perfect Wall of Sound moment, that sent shivers down my backside.
My compliments to Ben Thomas for his vocal contribution, especially in light of the various footsteps he had to follow. Although a bit more volume by way of the mixing hand at the desk would have made it even better. And there were some tinny moments – was it the microphone?
Special thanks to Dweezil for bringing his Dad’s trusty SG along. I’d never thought I’d see this beauty in action. Thank you very much.
Having said that the whole band was pretty impressive. The drums kept me dancing through the whole set. Even during the quirkier bits. And to hear a vibraphone live is always a treat one can’t enjoy too often. Plus some excellent bongo bouncing: I wish I had a pair of bongos, indeed!
The One Woman Woodwind Section (plus keyboards throwing in for good measure) was fantastic. May I ask how many hands you actually have, madam?
The whole ensemble was rounded up by fine bass and guitar playing on the far right of the stage (audience view). What am I saying: the whole thing was bloody brilliant. Didn’t have a such a great concert experience in a long time (probably The Who in 2007).
The set list was very satisfying. I wasn’t too sure what to expect but what came was exactly to my taste. And it brings me close to tears when I think about the fact that I had a ticket for Wolverhampton, UK, in 2005, when the tour was cancelled. What a shame.
Set (if memory serves – I don’t write at concerts, I dance):
1. Peaches en Regalia 2. Montana 3. Penguin in Bondage 4. Pygmy Twylyte 5. - ahm, can’t remember the title, sorry 6. Village of the Sun 7. Echidna’s Arf (Of You) 8. - 200 (or 300) Motels, but again, can’t remember the title(s?) 9. Inca Roads 10. Bamboozled By Love 11. - didn’t know this one, but was reminded of Blue Light (wasn’t Blue Light though). Gave everybody in the band a bit of space for soloing. Good old Zappa tradition I might add. 12. Lucille (Hasn’t messed my mind up, fortunately – hate it when that happens) 13. Outside Now 15. I’m the Slime 16. Cosmic Debris
Encore: 17. Zomby Woof 18. Willie the Pimp (what an excellent choice)
Encore II – or Bonus Tracks as we say today 19. Dirty Love 20. Trouble Every Day
Four tracks from my first FZ album ever – Overnite Sensation! I’m a happy man.
I would be grateful if someone who was there could fill in the blanks. Ta!
Everyone else who hasn’t been to one of the shows yet and enjoys the music of FZ: Get your ticket NOW!
I very much hope that this wasn’t the last we have seen of ZappaPlaysZappa on this side of the Atlantic.
Thanks again!
