Did you attend the ZPZ show at Grosse Freiheit 36 in Hamburg?

Dweezil and the band love reading your reviews.

Please do not post in this thread if you did not attend the show.

Good morning from Hamburg,

I´v been there and what shall I say - best concert since Miles Davis in 1993 in Hamburg (for me)

compared to the org. FZ concert in Hamburg in 1983??
Far more better !!, DZ , you´ve created that kind of "filmore-east" or "roxy-elswere" club atmosphere

- 2,5h without a break - of best of Zappa
- focused on the 70´s
- Top Band !! all of you (hi Sheela - you were great)
- supperb vocals
- followed by : personal talkings in front of stage incl. autograph´s & expensive T-shirts (hadtobyone)
- no former FZ band members in Hamburg (where was Ray ? ) but that is nothing to worry about

DZ: great playing -

- you have a top band but noone could understand the introduction of the bandmembers - take more time for that / they deserve it
- turn down the high frequencies a bit

scheiß handy fotos :-((

Best regards - see ya next time

I was there.

Unfortunately not till the very end of the show, since I had to catch the last train to Bremen at 23:15. Anyway, it was wonderful! I was born too late (1980) to visit any of the original FZ shows, but what I saw and heard yesterday is NOT worse than any of FZ shows I had ever seen on video. My special respect to Sheila. She is mega-professional! Dweezil your guitar playing is great! Sometimes you even beat Frank!

I have a question. There was a song with the following refrain "I can't wait to see what it's like to be upside down". What is the name of this song?

That would be "I can't wait to see what it's like on the outside now" from Outside Now (Joes Garage).

A night to remember! As usual the first couple of minutes were needed to find the right sound (and switching off the tuning gadget definitely helps) but then it was crisp and clear. It is hard to say what my favourite moment was but I think I’ll go for the Roxy set with “Village Of The Sun”, “Echidna’s Arf” and “Don’t You Ever Wash That Thing?” About two thirds through the lot came a perfect Wall of Sound moment, that sent shivers down my backside.

My compliments to Ben Thomas for his vocal contribution, especially in light of the various footsteps he had to follow. Although a bit more volume by way of the mixing hand at the desk would have made it even better. And there were some tinny moments – was it the microphone?

Special thanks to Dweezil for bringing his Dad’s trusty SG along. I’d never thought I’d see this beauty in action. Thank you very much.

Having said that the whole band was pretty impressive. The drums kept me dancing through the whole set. Even during the quirkier bits. And to hear a vibraphone live is always a treat one can’t enjoy too often. Plus some excellent bongo bouncing: I wish I had a pair of bongos, indeed!

The One Woman Woodwind Section (plus keyboards throwing in for good measure) was fantastic. May I ask how many hands you actually have, madam?

The whole ensemble was rounded up by fine bass and guitar playing on the far right of the stage (audience view). What am I saying: the whole thing was bloody brilliant. Didn’t have a such a great concert experience in a long time (probably The Who in 2007).

The set list was very satisfying. I wasn’t too sure what to expect but what came was exactly to my taste. And it brings me close to tears when I think about the fact that I had a ticket for Wolverhampton, UK, in 2005, when the tour was cancelled. What a shame.

Set (if memory serves – I don’t write at concerts, I dance):

1. Peaches en Regalia
2. Montana
3. Penguin in Bondage
4. Pygmy Twylyte
5. - ahm, can’t remember the title, sorry
6. Village of the Sun
7. Echidna’s Arf (Of You)
8. - 200 (or 300) Motels, but again, can’t remember the title(s?)
9. Inca Roads
10. Bamboozled By Love
11. - didn’t know this one, but was reminded of Blue Light (wasn’t Blue Light though). Gave everybody in the band a bit of space for soloing. Good old Zappa tradition I might add.
12. Lucille (Hasn’t messed my mind up, fortunately – hate it when that happens)
13. Outside Now
15. I’m the Slime
16. Cosmic Debris

Encore:
17. Zomby Woof
18. Willie the Pimp (what an excellent choice)

Encore II – or Bonus Tracks as we say today
19. Dirty Love
20. Trouble Every Day

Four tracks from my first FZ album ever – Overnite Sensation! I’m a happy man.

I would be grateful if someone who was there could fill in the blanks. Ta!

Everyone else who hasn’t been to one of the shows yet and enjoys the music of FZ: Get your ticket NOW!

I very much hope that this wasn’t the last we have seen of ZappaPlaysZappa on this side of the Atlantic.

Thanks again!

KH

I enjoyed the show immensely, although I hadn't reckoned on the venue being in the middle of the Reeperbahn so found it tricky to park, (mental note to self, do some homework beforehand)

I too really enjoyed the Roxy suite the best, the SG sure sounds good.

I loved the sax solo that was pure musical genius.

Loved Ben's vocals good choice there, he managed to convincingly cover moments that both Beefheart and Napoleon had done before him, in his own style well done sir!

Looking forward to the next time,

Thanks

I can't remember what was played after Pygmy Twilight but it was Roxy stuff I'm sure
Track 8 was Magic Fingers
Track 11 I'm sure was Uncle Meat (it was only yesterday and I'm struggling to remember!)
and 21 was Token of my extreme - outro

Racking my brains I think the missing track may have been Florentine Pogen

Thanks for your efforts. I'm quite certain that it was not something from Roxy after Pygmy Twylyte. Neither was no. 10 Uncle Meat - unless it has been altered to a completely new piece.

Track 21? Hm.

Token aka Hush Hush Hush was definitely played as the instrumental outro

Hi,
I was there, it was a great show, and I liked it a lot.
I saw FZ in 1982 and for me this concert was better. Well, I liked it better.
There is something wrong with your setlist, regarding the song with the many solos in it. I am sure it was King Kong. It was a very fast, denaturated version, but it was King Kong.
Maybe someone taped the show? That would be really great.

Yes it was King Kong, I remember now the sampled organ bit being really loud and clear.

A man sat down at a bar and told the bartender, "I bet you three hundred dollars that I can piss into the cup all the way over there on the other side of the bar and not miss a single drop."nike air max tn
The bartender said, "There is no way you can do that. Sure, I'll bet you three hundred dollars." nike air max
The man then begins to undo his pants and begins pissing. He starts pissing all over the bar, spraying on the bottles and the bartender, not making a single drop in the cup. nike air max 95
The bartender starts smiling and laughing and says, "That's it, you owe me three hundred dollars." nike air max
The man then gets up and walks over to the pool table and starts laughing and shaking hands with the men standing there. He walks back to bar, sits down and starts laughing at the bartender and hands him the money.
The bartender asks, "Why are you laughing? You just lost the bet."nike tnThe man said, "I'm laughing because I bet those guys over there one thousand dollars that I could piss all over you and your bar and you would still be laughing when I was done."
