Did you attend the ZPZ show at House of Culture in Helsinki?

Dweezil and the band love reading your reviews.

Please do not post in this thread if you did not attend the show.

Wow. What a concert. A huge thanks to Dweezil and to the whole band for giving us such a tremendous musical experience tonight. You really rocked the house!

It was a great pleasure witness Zappa playing again in the House of Culture. The last time at this place was 35 years ago when the YCDTOS vol 2 "the Helsinki Concert" was recorded -which was setting a special mood & expectations for this day. For a 'younger generation' of Zappa fan like me it was nice to see that there were many old fans present who had seen Frank playing here at 1974. And the youngest listener in the front row was only 12 ... great for the future. I had not seen ever Zappa playing live so this was very exiting event for me in that sense.

But about todays musical fireworks; the audiece was really concentrating well and expecting to hear pieces that Frank played 35 years ago. We had a relly good time there (and I can believe I can speak on behalf of the whole audience) - it was difficult to sit in the chair... The set was as expected, including much of Roxy stuff but including also surprises like the verse of Finnish "Satumaa tango" which was a speciality of 1974 concert. Whipping Post was not on the list, despite of some consistent requests ; )

At the moment I cannot describe the highlights of the whole >2,5hr show, there was too many of them.. Inca roads with Scheila's marvellous sax solo was something unforgettable. And the Black Page #2. A Pound for a Brown was really grooving. As well as band solos - which lasted at least 30-40 min.. I was almost hypnotised by Dweezil's solos, not to mention percussions+drums interplay. We could have also continued more with 'audience & band interaction' ... that was really funny (lots of laughs) :D And in the last encore song Willie the Pimp, I did not recognise immediately that in the middle of the song there was only Dweezil+drums playing while the rest of band was only jamming.. The sonic landscape was somethig amazing through the show. I can try to analyse the show more later when I have slept over the night.

The venue was working well, a quite intimate place but when band was playing louder songs, it was difficult to hear Ben's voice over the other instruments. But that did not bother much (and most of the people knew the words anyway :)

I hope the band had as good time as us - welcome back to Finland again!

Thank you Dweezil and the band for a great show last night at Cultural House of Helsinki! It was very exciting to hear Frank´s music live on stage again. I´ve been lucky to see Frank and The Mothers of Invention three times in Helsinki. The first gig was at Finlandia Hall 1973 or so. That was really unforgettable experience. I was sitting in the front row. The band was full of great musicians like Ruth Underwood, Chester Thompson and George Duke. Especially Ruth´s performance was unbelievable. Like Sheila´s sax solos and Joe´s performance yesterday. That concert at Finlandia Hall was a musical fireworks ever seen and influenced to my musical career a lot. Frank´s way of concucting the orchestra with a forefinger was the intense visual expression, that I won´t forget. The same movements as classical conductors do, but so much more economical conducting without sweat! What a great band it was then and what a great band you have now. Thanks Dweezil and have a good time with the rest of your tour.

I'm 30 years old now, and by the time I got excited about Frank Zappa, it was too late to see him play live. Fortunate coincidences made it possible for me to see the concert last night.

I just happened to read the book on Frank by Barry Miles a month ago, and obviously his records have had at least their fair share on my stereo since then. Then a week ago I happened to give a ride to a French guy working in Finland, who recognised "Water melon in easter hay" on my car stereo, and told me about the concert I was about to miss. That's just one example of music connecting people from around the world, even though with non-existing media exposure you have to do some work to first find it and then appreciate the complexity of it. And there happened to be a few tickets still available.

The concert was great of course with awesome music and musicians. The interaction with the audience during and after the show was surely appreciated by anyone who was there. Dweezil seems to be someone very likeable and smart, like in the moments when he had a chat with the young girl in the front row or when someone requested "Dangerous kitchen" and Dweezil said something like "I grew up in that house and trust me, that song is accurate". By the way, if you didn't know, every band (big or small, good or bad) that plays in Finland is asked to play Paranoid at some point of the show.

Walking out I looked back at it and though "If only they had played that one song, it would have been so good. And this one, and maybe that one as well. Yeah, and... let's face it, there's enough great material to do a few more concerts. So see you next time. My fiancé, who didn't probably know most of the tunes played yesterday, said it well: this music is completely timeless, never in fashion, always relevant.

In short, Frank's music is very much alive and made new friends yesterday.

Okay... It all began with Black Napkins and it was just as perfect as it can get. After the warm up with Napkins the the mood changed while band began to play Montana and George-Michael-surfer-look-a-like walked on a stage and started singing. To be honest my first reaction was "oh no! What a F....ing prettyfly we have here", but... Ben sung Montana okeish and the rest of the set EXCELLENTLY. He is a true gem for D's project as soon as he increases his (physical) presence on the stage. He's so modest with that incredible set of vocal skills. Thumbs up for Ben. (and for some reason my wife also sends her warm thanks to Ben).

The gig lasted for 3 hours and it was filled with imaginary solos, surprises and yes few verses of Satumaa, the Finnish Tango from original Helsinki Concert (22.9.1974, YCDTOSA vol. 2). This time nobody tried to sing it, like Napoleon tried last time.

The set was a mixture of last European tour and the current one. There were lots of material from Roxy (some parts in the same order in 1974 gig, beginning with the Village of the Sun), a pair from Joe's Garage (excellent version of Lucille and semi-long version of Outside Now, I really missed Joe's Garage from last tour), Wind up and Black Napkins from Zoot, Black Page 1 (only with drums) & 2, Bamboozled by Love (extremely hard ass version), Peaches in the middle of the show (it's funny how it always gets your skin on goose pumps). Set included also G-Spot, Inca Roads, Penguin etc.. Unfortunately there were also a bunch of songs from Overnite (Montana, Zombie Woof & Apostrophe (Yellow Snow, Cosmic Debris) which aren't my favorites (but are D's). Someone more accurate listener can fill in the blanks and put the songs in correct order. There was the conducted improvisation -session in the middle of the show and it was funny. The band was great and audience wasn't bad either. The show ended with a extremely "nice" (=hard) version of Willie the Pimp.

The band was again a very professional and had enough "blink in their eye". Joe almost broke his drum set during his solo (or did he actually break it once?) and took the band into and through Satumaa by humming the melody (actually twice... there were some technical difficulties in the middle of the show with on of Billy's Microphones and the moment was saved by Joe & Satumaa). Billy was on fire (how can he make playing all those instruments look so easy). Pete is the best headbang bass player in the universe and Jamie plays guitar elegantly like he was born it on his hands. Scheila was herself (and that's a praise). Dweezil well... he was master on the stage and earned it.

All in all it was a great show, but (there's always a but) there was something that I missed from the previous tour and that was Frank playing with the band. In their last European tour Frank was projected to play with the band and it was amazing experience. That's something I missed. And with that said "Dumb all over" should be a must in all sets. ;-)

It was also an unexpected pleasure to meet Gail on the stage after the show.

Great gig, great audience. Now I am satisfied for a year. But I expect to see ZPZ back in Helsinki next year. Did I see you nod, Dweezil, didn't I?

Music is the best.

This was the best show that I saw.

It was a really fine hall of Alvaar Aalto, it was a really fine acoustics, it was a really fine band, it was a really fine performance, it was a really fine music, it was a really fine improvisation, it was a really fine song, it was a really fine audience.

I will watch your show in St. Petersburg, and with me comes a lot of my friends who also likes Zappa.
I hope there is no rain, and you will fine walk around the city.

I was at your concert two years ago in Stockholm, and saw it as Dweezil played with his father on the screen - I would like to see it again.(pity, that there was not this). And I screamed to Dweezil, what I from Russia and we are waiting for him with the concert, and now it goes to us. WOW

OK see you soon

Great show in Helsinki!

I'm was a big fan of Frank when he was alive, and so happy to hear that you were playing his music, but at the same time a bit skeptical. After seeing a couple of YouTube clips i knew i had to see the show and i was thoroughly pleased. I took my son along and even though he wasn't familiar with the music, he thought it was a great show, better than he had been expecting.

Back in the early 80's i saw Frank for the first of about 7 times, and i'll never forget when he came out alone on stage and started playing Black Napkins. I was secretly hoping that ZPZ would lead of with this number. When DZ played a perfect rendition, my eyes began to tear up and as the old wonderful tunes kept coming the tears did too. Your father had such an impact on us fans, all the memories kept coming back.

Thanks Dweezil for what you are doing, all the politics etc aside, keep the music alive.

An engineer dies and reports to the pearly gates. St. Peter checks his dossier and says, "Ah, you're an engineer -- you're in the wrong place."
So, the engineer reports to the gates of hell and is let in. Pretty soon, the engineer gets dissatisfied with the level of comfort in hell, and starts designing and building improvements. After awhile, they've got air conditioning and flush toilets and escalators, and the engineer is a pretty popular guy.

One day, God calls Satan up on the telephone and says with a sneer, "So, how's it going down there in hell?" nike tn

Satan replies, "Hey, things are going great. We've got air conditioning and flush toilets and escalators, and there's no telling what this engineer is going to come up with next." nike air max

God replies, "What??? You've got an engineer? That's a mistake -- he should never have gotten down there; send him up here." nike chaussures

Satan says, "No way." I like having an engineer on the staff, and I'm keeping him." nike shox

God says, "Send him back up here or I'll sue." nike shoes

Satan laughs uproariously and answers, "Yeah, right. And just where are YOU going to get a lawyer?"
