Did you attend the ZPZ show at Vega in Copenhagen?

Dweezil and the band love reading your reviews.

Please do not post in this thread if you did not attend the show.

Enjoyed the concert - had a lot of beers afterwards.

But: It was a pleasure listening to really FINE music, played by really FINE musicians, to a really FINE audience, in a really FINE venue!!!

So to The Dweez and the band: Thanks for a great concert and enjoy the rest of your tour, and looking forward to seeing you back in Copenhagen in a couple of years.

:-)

Third time around in Denmark. Last time in Aarhus, we only got a little over an hour, because the band had to catch a ferry to Norway. So I hoped for something special this time.

At 20:15 the band enters the stage. Kind of miss the old FZ style of opening with an all black stage, the band starting, Zappa entering the stage, a soaring guitar solo.. - always gave me the goose bumps! But that was then - this is now - and rather surprisingly, they opened with The Purple Lagoon. What a hard-core opening! I wanted goose bumps - I got goose bumps :-)

I didn't write down the entire set list, so this is just a few highlights. Like the powerful Magic Fingers, and the wonderful Village of The Sun, Echidna, Don't You Ever Wash trio with a lot of fine solo work - and I'm not even going to note, that Joe dropped a drum stick during his part ;-) Didn't matter - it was still great :-)

The sound was great as usual - everything crystal clear!

Some technical problems with Billy's instruments distracted me a lot - and the band too, unfortunately! DZ had to twist the set list to avoid songs, that Billy plays a lot on. So we got a tight Dirty Love. And some lucky guy in the audience won a nice golden guitar - and he got to play a bit with the band, while the problems were fixed. A "strat", was it!? I'm not a guitar player - lucky I didn't win ;-)

When the problems were finally fixed after 20 minutes or so, Inca Roads put the band (and the audience) right back on track! What a beautiful, tight performance! With truly beautiful and excellent solos by DZ and Scheila (on sax). From then on, everything was just perfect! G-Spot Tornado cracks me up every time :-) How on earth can they play it!!?? Funny robot-dancing by Ben :-) The band didn't notice - they were far to busy playing their instruments in this impossible-to-play tune :-)

I've always considered Outside Now to be an extremely beautiful tune (lyrics aside)! And this performance was exactly that! Clearly another highlight!

More Trouble Every Day was the vehicle for the extended soloing this evening. Amazing performances by everyone! And Ben jumped off stage and really got the audience going. Scheila would probably consider herself abused :-) Sax-solo, keyboard-solo, flute-solo, another sax, TWO saxes (interesting sound by the way) - after which DZ handed her his guitar!! :-) After which Joe handed her the drum sticks!! You can't do that on stage anymore :-)

Extremely powerful Bamboozled - with soloing over "Owner Of A Lonely Heart" - like the 1984 tour, remember :-) I loved it!

Yellow Snow, Zomby Woof, Willie The Pimp for the encores - and the band and the audience were exhausted after a great night, where Ben showed so may times, that he really CAN sing! And Jamie showed that he also can play bad-ass guitar solos - at least three very fine solos from him during the concert.

Each and every band member is a true star - and I can't wait for you guys to come back! Thank you!

Last night, for 3 hours, Zpz put Tycho Brahe to shame by making Copenhagen the centre of the universe. A very relaxed but tight band, managed to create a very unusual atmosphere of friendship and love. We were Danes the way we ought to be!
As the first person at the door to the venue, I couldn’t help feeling as an cultural minority in my own capital, as a character from Fahrenheit 451 who has memorized his favorite music and is now looking for fellow victims of the central scrutinizer. There were no Zpz posters, and two tour busses camouflaged the entrens , so I felt safe. There were even a sign in the window proclaiming that “Papa Roach” was playing and the doors would be opened at 1900 hours! Of cause I recognized the lingo of “Zappa Universe Slang” and did not go home.
Then it happened, “people came”! Cool sober Danes! None had bricks in their hands and there were no dirty jokes or bigotry to be heard! In fact one guy, slightly out of breath, came late (he thought) and went straight to the front of the line to secure a ticket. This “provoked” a gentleman (who had broken a toe a few hours before coming to the concert), to offer the guy money for the ticket “if he was a bit short”, wow.

If true Danish kindness and broadmindedness is a hunted minority today, then Dweezil and company supplied “Obama sized” support and encouragement for a whole underground movement. Everything was perfect, even the few mistakes and mishaps. That’s Entertaintment!

WHAT A SHOW wednesday night in Cph! Dweezil fulfilled his promise from the 2007 show in Århus when he promised something special next time they came to DK. A very long setlist (see further below) at least 21 because the band had to play something different from the list because of the technical problems with Billys instrument. So we got to choose between Black Napkins and Apostrophe - the later won. Also "Smoke on the water" popped up 1½ time .
It's the fourth ime (3 in DK and 1 in Barcelona) I hear/see the band and it's amazing how they have grown. They are all fantastic musicians, they enjoy playing this music and they transmit everything to the audience. I was so lucky to stand front row centre (spot on - guy in black hoodie) and from there it was quite clear that technicians and "not playing/singing" musicians all took part in the party. For instance Ben, Scheila and Billy danced/made their own choreography several times. BTW it was really great to hear Bens way of singing the songs and adding his vocal rythm/beat (you got to attend the show to exactlty understand this). Scheila is unbelievable - Dweezil "commanded" her to play all her instruments (sax and clarinet at the same time!), guitar (sounded like Vai-inspired stuff) and finally the drums that winded up in "Smoke on the water" with Joe singing. What do you say?
Scheila - thanks a lot for the setlist and doble signing it (pay back from Århus 07); Ben, Joe, Pete, Jamie and Billy - you're all so excepcional and gifted musicians (that goes for Scheila also) and it's with high expectations that I (we) attend the shows, and you fulfill them all.
Dwezil - as I told you, thanks for doing this project. It's important to maintain Franks music alive. It doesn't matter that there none of the "veterans" in the band - you've picked a young/new line up that so is solid and tight. Thanx.

Intended setlist
Purple lagoon
Imaginary diseases
magic fingers
montana
village of the sun
echidna's arf
don't you ever wash ...
(Apostrophe and other stuff came in here I think)
dirty love
inca roads
Black page 1 & 2
bamboozled
outside now
lumpy gravy
g-spot tornado (WOW)
cosmik debris
trouble everyday
zomby woof
Encore: yellow snow & willie the pimp

Enjoy the rest of the tour - and to rest of you out there: go to the ZPZ shows

Claus

Dear ZPZ,

You should all be ashamed to leave a grown up man on the verge of tears at a concert! Kicking off with the spectacular Purple Lagoon was almost too much for my tear canals to handle - but what I'm actually trying to say is just THANKS!

I guess that I belong to the younger part of the audience (23 and still going strong) and I'm just grateful to have the opportunity to hear Frank's music played live - and when it's being performed by musical wizards with lots of humour and a great, relaxed attitude added, nobody can really complain 'bout anything, right?

I too went to the 'catch-a-ferry' show in Aarhus in ´07, but with the 3-hour show last night, I got all the Zappa-show, I missed out on back then and a lot more to go with it! Great choice of songs - Lumpy Gravy might be one of the happiest tunes ever written and reminded me, that I hadn't put on my red Lumpy-shirt for nothing =)

Ben is really coming along fast and did a great job spicing things up with dance and humour - grab a hold of him, he's a brilliant addition to the band. I never felt that alumnis were lacking on stage - of course Vai can shred everything to pieces (but in my mind he's just plain uninspired) and Ray was outstanding during ZPZ's last tours - but when you get such a talented group of young musicians to deliver the music with such energy, it just really serves to emphasise the point, that ZPZ is all about passing the legacy of FZ on to new generations!

I loved every minute of it - please come back soon. Until then, I'll just wait for the new DVDs to come out (Roxy new AND 'original'?) =)

- Steffen

THANK YOU everybody in the band - and behind the scenes - for this wonderful evening filled up with some of the greatest music in this world.
I'm 55 and brought along my two little kids (18 and 20 :-).
Once again they were happy to join me to a ZpZ concert in Copenhagen - those poor little things never got the opportunity to hear the Great Master himself live in concert.
We all had a splendid evening with your musical skill.
Thanks Dweezil for doing this. We love it.

And perhaps a little controversial:
I don't mean to abuse anybody in the Z family, but I DO think that ZpZ ought to attend the 20th annual celebration of the music of Frank Zappa this summer at the litttle German music festival "Zappanale".
Forget the lawsuit and get friends.
The spritual feelings at the festival are like we're all one family with one common interest - listening to Franks music.
Imagine 3-4000 (friendly and happy) people gathering for 3 days listening to compositions of Frank Zappa....

See you :-?
Love
Michael
..............
Z for evigt

I frequently find myself hesitating to use the word 'awesome' (which I think is one of the most over used words in the English language, boo hiss you Americans : ). That said - this band, this concert was awesome. Dweezil - you're a magician, and thank you, thank you, thank you for keeping your father's music alive.

I went to the Malmø show too, more on that on the Malmø review page.

Amos asked his mother whether they could have a video.
"I’m afraid we can’t afford one," sighed his mother.
But on the following day in came Amos, staggering beneath the weight of a brand-new video. tn requin
"How on earth did you pay for that?" gasped his mothernike tn.

A man approached a beautiful woman in a supermarket
and asked her, “You know, I've lost my wife here in
the supermarket. Can you please talk to me for a few
minutes?” The woman asked him, “Why?” “Oh,
you know, because every time I talk to a beautiful
woman, my wife will appear out of nowhere!”
