Amazing show. My friends and I drove up from Cincinnati and had a great time. We had 3rd row center seats and got to see everything. Dweezil and the band were superb. I expected this having seen you two summers ago in Cincinnati but my friends were dumbfounded at just how incredible this band is. Dweezil, thank you for putting this band together and continuing to get your father's music out there. I only got to see FZ once, in 1988, and that just wasn't enough. ZPZ is so talented and so much fun to watch, its letting all of us share in and continue to appreciate your father's music.
The crowd grew all night starting from being half empty (where was everyone? at the baseball game next door?) but by the end of the night, it was packed. The crowd was also very appreciative and knowledgeable. There were a few rowdy folks but otherwise a great crowd.
About the show itself. The band hit the stage a little after 8. At first the sound wasn't mixed properly but it improved all night. From the beginning, the band was really into it and seemed excited to be there. As the night went on, the band got hotter and hotter, and the bass player got wilder and wilder, as did the singer. Dweezil came out and introduced the new singer and then they launched into Montana. Set list follows below. I felt bad for the singer, he sang lead on one song, backup on the next, and then sat down for awhile. Poor guy!
Setlist:
Montana Village of the Sun (segue) Echidna's Arf (segue) Don't You Ever Wash That Thing <<--- thank you! Never thought I'd see that live
Dweezil told a story about some woman who made some funny/obscene remarks at him last time in Columbus. This became a running joke through the night in songs like Inca Roads.
Dirty Love Magic Fingers (segue) Carolina Hard Core Ecstasy Intro to Black Page drum solo Black Page #1 Drum Solo (segue) musical vamp > Black Page #2 with "ballet dancing" by lead singer Pygmy Twylyte (sp?) Quaalude Thunder version Eat That Question <<-- unbelievable Cosmik Debris Purple Lagoon (intro) (segue) Inca Roads Dweezil introduces two songs from Joe's Garage Lucille Outside Now Bamboozled By Love (with Owner of a Lonely Heart guitar solo) Trouble Every Day (segue) solos (everyone got to do solos here over a variety of backing pieces, I picked up on some of the bass riffs but the only one I remember is Packard Goose) Token of My Extreme
Encore: Don't Eat the Yellow Snow San Bern'dino Willie the Pimp
The show lasted almost 3 hours (call it 2 hours 45 minutes). Dweezil hung around to sign autographs. I wonder if the woman from the show 2 years ago that he told the story of stuck around to see him?
Just a few last comments. Inca Roads was a personal highlight. My favorite FZ song and they played it so well. Sheila did an amazing job on flute. Of course she did an amazing job all night. Seeing them play Eat That Question was really unexpected.
Finally, Dweezil, please bring the band back to Cincinnati on your next tour! We didn't mind driving 2 hours to see you but it would be so great to have you in our back yard again!
If you are a reader of this board and have not seen ZPZ play, it is worth you while to see them even if you have to drive a couple of hours. This may be the best band out there.
