Did you attend the ZPZ show at the LC Outdoor Pavilion in Columbus?

Dweezil and the band love reading your reviews.

Please do not post in this thread if you did not attend the show.

All I can say is WOW - the band was SMOKING HOT tonight! They were tight and the weather was perfect.

We were the tie die guys (Hello Sheila!) at the end of the 3rd row in front of Jamie. What seats!

I was a little disappointed when they did "Bamboozled by Love" and didn't mix in "Owner of a Lonely Heart", but that's the ONLY thing I can find to bitch about. Dweezil and the band are getting better and better every time we see them.

Is MY face red - I just read the next post and saw where they DID mix in "owner of a lonley heart". I don't know how I missed it, but I did. (My hair is getting pretty good in the back though.)

Ben is a great fit - what a singer. He really adds to the whole ZPZ experience. (His "interpretive dance" number was great too.)

We loved Billy and Joe with their percussion duets and solos, but Jamie REALLY knocked our socks after he got out his lime green Fender. Sheila was outstanding as well, although we were sitting at the wrong end to see much of her. Pete was right on as usual, and there was more "Dweezil" in the long jams as well. He was awsome! I think Frank would be very proud and pleased with all of their efforts.

I can't wait for next time we can see them! I sure hope ZPZ comes through the northwest again in the fall WITHOUT Progressive Nation. We have no interest in having to sit though other bands to hear the good stuff - we want the mainliners for the whole evening!

Thank you very much for putting on such a great show!

Amazing show. My friends and I drove up from Cincinnati and had a great time. We had 3rd row center seats and got to see everything. Dweezil and the band were superb. I expected this having seen you two summers ago in Cincinnati but my friends were dumbfounded at just how incredible this band is. Dweezil, thank you for putting this band together and continuing to get your father's music out there. I only got to see FZ once, in 1988, and that just wasn't enough. ZPZ is so talented and so much fun to watch, its letting all of us share in and continue to appreciate your father's music.

The crowd grew all night starting from being half empty (where was everyone? at the baseball game next door?) but by the end of the night, it was packed. The crowd was also very appreciative and knowledgeable. There were a few rowdy folks but otherwise a great crowd.

About the show itself. The band hit the stage a little after 8. At first the sound wasn't mixed properly but it improved all night. From the beginning, the band was really into it and seemed excited to be there. As the night went on, the band got hotter and hotter, and the bass player got wilder and wilder, as did the singer. Dweezil came out and introduced the new singer and then they launched into Montana. Set list follows below. I felt bad for the singer, he sang lead on one song, backup on the next, and then sat down for awhile. Poor guy!

Setlist:

Montana
Village of the Sun (segue)
Echidna's Arf (segue)
Don't You Ever Wash That Thing <<--- thank you! Never thought I'd see that live

Dweezil told a story about some woman who made some funny/obscene remarks at him last time in Columbus. This became a running joke through the night in songs like Inca Roads.

Dirty Love
Magic Fingers (segue)
Carolina Hard Core Ecstasy
Intro to Black Page drum solo
Black Page #1 Drum Solo (segue)
musical vamp > Black Page #2 with "ballet dancing" by lead singer
Pygmy Twylyte (sp?) Quaalude Thunder version
Eat That Question <<-- unbelievable
Cosmik Debris
Purple Lagoon (intro) (segue)
Inca Roads
Dweezil introduces two songs from Joe's Garage
Lucille
Outside Now
Bamboozled By Love (with Owner of a Lonely Heart guitar solo)
Trouble Every Day (segue)
solos (everyone got to do solos here over a variety of backing pieces, I picked
up on some of the bass riffs but the only one I remember is Packard Goose)
Token of My Extreme

Encore:
Don't Eat the Yellow Snow
San Bern'dino
Willie the Pimp

The show lasted almost 3 hours (call it 2 hours 45 minutes). Dweezil hung around to sign autographs. I wonder if the woman from the show 2 years ago that he told the story of stuck around to see him?

Just a few last comments. Inca Roads was a personal highlight. My favorite FZ song and they played it so well. Sheila did an amazing job on flute. Of course she did an amazing job all night. Seeing them play Eat That Question was really unexpected.

Finally, Dweezil, please bring the band back to Cincinnati on your next tour! We didn't mind driving 2 hours to see you but it would be so great to have you in our back yard again!

If you are a reader of this board and have not seen ZPZ play, it is worth you while to see them even if you have to drive a couple of hours. This may be the best band out there.

First of GREAT show!! my 4th ZPZ show since the last Columbus show 2 years ago. I must say the outdoor sound is amazing! I brought my 50 some year old Dad to the show and a couple of band mates we were blown away!! My Dad ranked it among the best live shows he's ever seen! And said some of the solos were worth the admission price alone. Good set list 2!! The new vocalist Ben definitely nailed it on Lucile and Outside now! Tears of absolute pleasure behind my aviators on that solo! So much emotion in those songs. I cant stop listening to Frank's music not that i ever should! I love hearing it live in the absolute purest form in the highest fidelity possible!! cant wait till the next one!! Keep converting the young ones! keep rotating the group! keep the ladies sprung!! BIG UPS!!!! Rac1- Dayton Ohio

From one of ZPZ's 60+ fans - seems like quite a few posts are coming from 3rd row, center section -
I took my two kids and one's spouse (all 30+) to the concert in July 07 in Columbus and all loved the music and had a great time. When I told them ZPZ would be in Columbus in July 09 they were very enthusiastic about going again.

The difference I saw in the concerts was that the 07 concert tried to stay more true to the original songs even including the solos, intros, etc. (the Yo Mama solo and the Don Pardo intro of the Ill. Enema Bandit, for instance). Yesterday's concert was an impressive list of FZ songs, but many of them were done in a more ZPZ way. Is this band forming its own identity just like the numerous FZ bands did? Anyway, three of the four of us (including me) thought last night's concert was the better of the two, even though, as for myself, I could not tell you which concert I enjoyed more. I am quite sure the four of us will attend the next ZPZ concert in Columbus.

The other difference I noticed was that the crowd seemed much younger last night. In 07 most of the crowd seemed to be old guys like me but last night we Boomers seemed to be in the minority for once. Keep this music alive!

The show was GREAT, but every one I have been to has been. Also, I want to thank whoever gave me the VIP pass (sense I'm not totally sure who gave it too me). Dweezil, thanks for signing the guitar and CD! Joe, I enjoyed meeting and talking your parents and aunt and uncle at the Cleveland show. They are very nice people!

Hope to see you again soon!

It is a privilege to attend these concerts. As one of moir's kids referenced above, I never thought I would be able to enjoy this music in concert with him. We attended the concert in '07 and I'm surprised at how very different these concerts really were. Dad is correct in stating that the concert last night added a flare of DZ's uniqueness. The difference between the two concerts portrays this band's amazing musical ability. I thought Ben brought a new groove to the group while truely feeling the original music. Each member of the band has their own unique talent and style that can still reflect the original songs. Thanks to Dweezil for putting together such amazing talent and sharing this music with us. Without it, I would never have had the opportunity to experience this music live in concert.

We had a great time and I can't wait to see the show again; maybe next time I'll bring my own sons so they can enjoy the music with Grandpa. This music will live on for generations.

Here's a late post on the Columbus show. I'm old enough to have attended shows as far back as the '70s and did see Frank once back in '76 in Cleveland (I recall someone in the audience giving him a hardhat with a pink flamigo glued to the top of it... and he wore it for at least part of the show...), I have not been a diehard fan and don't know much of Frank's work. However, I'm smart enough to know Frank and his bands were expectional as is Dweezel and his compadres. This will probably be the only music show I attend this year and I feel I picked the best, must-see show to go to.

I've attended both ZPZ shows in Columbus and loved them both. We've been lucky to get excellent weather on both occasions and we seem to have a much better than average venue in the LS Pavillion. Perhaps the band has been psyched when playing here, in part because of that. They seemed to play very tight and with plenty of energy.

I'd like to get more familair with the work, but am not sure exactly where to begin.

It would be great if it were possible to buy copies of shows, either as on-line downloads or as CDs. The (Grateful) Dead (did) does that sort of thing, as I image other bands to as well. I'd welcome the chance to buy a copy of the show. I sort of regret not picking up that "fan pack" they were selling at the venue. I did buy that cool brown T-shirt, which Dweezel graciously signed for me. He shows a lot of class sticking around to sign just about anything and everything people drop on him.

I didn't get around to coming to this website until a day before the show. Had I known ZPZ was playing the Hard Rock in Cleveland, I would have made the run up 71 to catch them there too.

Hopefully ZPZ will come back and visit us again soon.

cheers!

Other people:

I was about 11 when my hippie neighbors turned me on to the newly released "We're only in it for the Money" LP (yes vinyl, had the bonus pull out with punch out's like Franks moustache, money, other stuff). I saw Frank I don't know how many times in Columbus, Ohio. From smaller bars (the Agora) to Vetrans Memorial to other venues. I guess I started going to his concerts around 1974 and was lucky enough to see the Best Band You Never Heard In Your Life live. I remember one at Vets where people were being registered to vote in the lobby.

The reason I spew forth such ancient history is to try to legitimize the following statement:

I have to say that the current ZPZ band is every bit as good as any of Franks. Congrats to you all! It's really great to see the energy and joy you all seem to have playing his music. Not to mention getting it all correct. No “clams” as Ruth used to call them.

I really appreciate you breathing new life into the music and taking it on tour. I sat (well rarely, mainly I was on my feet behind the back row in the pit) with a huge smile on my face for the whole time. I LOVED the show. ‘Nuff said about that?

The only *complaint* I have is with the Deluxe DVD/CD I bought at the show. Arrrrgghh!!!!! I love it all *BUT* “Village of the Sun”, "Echidna's Arf (Of You)" should *ALWAYS* be followed with "Don't you ever wash that thing"!!!! Not having them together is like playing Robert Palmer’s "Sailing Shoes", "Hey Julia" and not following it with "Sneakin' Sally Through The Alley"!!! Please get that on DVD and you’ll sell at least one copy!

Dweezil: how was the opening pitch?

“He’s signing it!!!!” “I can’t believe he’s signing it!!!!”

Thanks
…Mudshark (Oh my hair is getting good in the back!)

BTW, I was hoping you'd play "Why Don't You Like Me?" !
Guess the political climate was a little to inclined to tar and feathering... :)

My wife and I, and our friends thoroughly enjoyed the show, and love the new singer.
As always, Sheila was awesome!

Most of us who went to the show together play musical instruments (at a very amateur level), and hearing this music, performed so well, really re-inspires our overall love for music.

ZPZ, please continue touring, we want to see you every year!
Also, please do another concert video. We are begging to have the opportunity to throw money at you so we can hear/see your performances :)

Big Fans in Columbus
