I've seen Dweezil 5 times (Fast Lane w/ Josh Freese on drums) Stone Pony and Theater of The Living Arts in Philly for the Shampoo Horn tour, ZPZ at the Beacon Theater (roughly 2 years ago) and then again last night in Asbury Park,NJ. As a musician I have witnessed Dweezil go from being a good guitar player to an excellent guitar player and excellent arranger. The bands he has always brought to the stage have always been nothing short of 'Top Shelf', and last night's group was indeed that and more.
I've seen Frank 8 times (even met him backstage in Germany on the last tour in '88) and if alive today Dad would be more than proud of what his talented son has done with his compositions.
I took my 10yr old son to the show last night and ZPZ blew his doors off! He's a young budding drummer and Joe Travers inspired him to no end (inspired me as well....always does!). We missed Pain of Salvation (not much of a fan), caught a few tunes from Big Elf (Big Yawn!!!!)....Took in the entire, magical ZPZ set.....left after 1.5 DT tunes (they just don't do anything for me as a whole). I dig a few of their tunes, but overall they come across flat to me in a live setting. With all the high tech bells and whistles, Portnoy's 6 Kabillion shells..yaddah yaddah.....it's one big kiddy show (I have seen them 4 times so I'm basing this all on that law of averages.....Yawn!!!).
In any event, Convention Hall in Asbury Park is an acoustical nightmare, however many props to the ZPZ engineer for getting the best possible quality out of a bad situation. I look forward to the next time ZPZ passes through my neighborhood and hopefully back in the headlining slot. This band is so unbelievably tight and their heart and soulful playing made me smile all night long. GREAT JOB DWEEZIL and CO.!!!!
