I was indeed there, front row, inches from Pete's bass pedals. This was a most memorable evening, special in so many ways. Thirty years of FZ fanaticism finally paid off as, at long last, I heard the music that influenced me beyond measure performed live by the flawless ZPZ band and the amazing Dweezil. I could go on and on about how great the performance and the band were, but it is certainly no revelation to anyone that in order to execute FZ's music one has to be a virtuoso, to put it mildly. Instead I will simply say that it is fantastic that FZ's music and legacy are alive and well, thanks to Dweezil's labor of love; a new generation of Zappa fanatics is coming of age, as evidenced by the number of young people in attendance. Most notably, a young boy that appeared to be perhaps 11 years old, standing right next to me in a t-shirt emblazoned with "My Guitar Wants To Kill Your Mama." For me, the highlight of the night was when Dweezil acknowledged this young guy and then proceeded to pull him from the crowd and hand over his Gibson guitar to the lad for an impromptu guitar lesson/ sit in. The look on this kid's face was priceless, and the glow coming off of him for the rest of the evening could have lit the room up all on its own. There is no doubt that this young man will remember last night for the rest of his life. Dweezil and co. are the epitome of class through and through; at show's end, guitarist Jamie Kime peeled his song list from the floor and handed it over to the young man; autographs followed. Especially noteworthy was Dweezil staying put on the stage for as long as it took to shake hands, talk with fans and sign every autograph asked of him. Dweezil took time to chat with me, shake my hand and autograph my ticket stub; bassist Pete Griffin shook my hand and gave me a guitar pick dropped earlier in the performance by Jamie Kime. Dweezil and the ZPZ band are a class act through and through; fans never forget these sorts of gracious gestures, and I know Frank would be so very proud that his legacy is being handled in such a dignified manner. For the icing on the cake, how can you go wrong with live performance of "Inca Roads", "A Pound For a Brown", "The Purple Lagoon", "Peaches En Regalia", "Apostrophe"....bless you DZ, and the entire ZPZ band; I salute you!!
