Did you attend the ZPZ solo show at the Odeon Events Centre in Saskatoon?

Dweezil and the band love reading your reviews.

Please do not post in this thread if you did not attend the show.

hi dweezil. caught your gig last night at the odeon. wow! what an awesome performance! absolutely incredible musicianship from all band members. i thought your dad was a great guitar player (and he is) but you are a chip off the ol' chops! i saw frank play in vancouver once in the early '80s and i never thought that i wd get another chance to hear his music played live. its a wonderful thing you are doing, keeping your dad's music alive through performance. he wd be proud of you. i've been listening to frank every week for over 40 years and last night was a real thrill - a truly memorable night of music. thanks for coming and i hope you remember us when planning your next tour. bob

Hi DZ:

Thanks for visiting Saskatoon. I've been listening to your Dad's records for about 30 years and never had the chance to see his music performed live. I was almost moved to tears a couple of times during the performance, thinking how you're keeping the work of a great artist alive. You're no slouch on the guitar yourself.

Anyway, thanks for "Montana," "San Ber'dino" and "Inca Roads." It's always fun to sing along with a live band. I was looking forward to hearing "Peaches and Regalia" played live, and whaddya know, you played it. I saw on another forum that you played "Billy the Mountain" in Vancouver. Maybe you'll play that here next time?

When I asked you after the show about your kids' names you gave me kind of a blank look. I read an interview from around 1981 or so in which the interviewer commented on your "strange" name, to which you replied that you'd like to name your kids after appliances: "Toaster" for example. Maybe you forgot the interview.

Anyway, thanks again for the show, and I hope to see you again.

GB

I was indeed there, front row, inches from Pete's bass pedals. This was a most memorable evening, special in so many ways. Thirty years of FZ fanaticism finally paid off as, at long last, I heard the music that influenced me beyond measure performed live by the flawless ZPZ band and the amazing Dweezil. I could go on and on about how great the performance and the band were, but it is certainly no revelation to anyone that in order to execute FZ's music one has to be a virtuoso, to put it mildly. Instead I will simply say that it is fantastic that FZ's music and legacy are alive and well, thanks to Dweezil's labor of love; a new generation of Zappa fanatics is coming of age, as evidenced by the number of young people in attendance. Most notably, a young boy that appeared to be perhaps 11 years old, standing right next to me in a t-shirt emblazoned with "My Guitar Wants To Kill Your Mama." For me, the highlight of the night was when Dweezil acknowledged this young guy and then proceeded to pull him from the crowd and hand over his Gibson guitar to the lad for an impromptu guitar lesson/ sit in. The look on this kid's face was priceless, and the glow coming off of him for the rest of the evening could have lit the room up all on its own. There is no doubt that this young man will remember last night for the rest of his life. Dweezil and co. are the epitome of class through and through; at show's end, guitarist Jamie Kime peeled his song list from the floor and handed it over to the young man; autographs followed.
Especially noteworthy was Dweezil staying put on the stage for as long as it took to shake hands, talk with fans and sign every autograph asked of him. Dweezil took time to chat with me, shake my hand and autograph my ticket stub; bassist Pete Griffin shook my hand and gave me a guitar pick dropped earlier in the performance by Jamie Kime. Dweezil and the ZPZ band are a class act through and through; fans never forget these sorts of gracious gestures, and I know Frank would be so very proud that his legacy is being handled in such a dignified manner.
For the icing on the cake, how can you go wrong with live performance of "Inca Roads", "A Pound For a Brown", "The Purple Lagoon", "Peaches En Regalia", "Apostrophe"....bless you DZ, and the entire ZPZ band; I salute you!!

I agree; that was classy.

Something else I found remarkable was how Dweezil, while performing his guitaristic intricacies, would occasionally look up at the crowd with the most beatific smile on his face. Usually guitar players have that expression of pain, as if their soul hurts, while soloing.

In a word, WOW! Aside from a few technical difficulties (minor stuff) first with Dweezil's guitar rig, then a percussion malfunction, it was an awesome performance!

When Frank Zappa hung up his touring shoes in 1988, I was 15, so I never got to see him play (he died in 1993). Dweezil and company represented Frank's music faithfully, and were onstage for about two and a half hours. Loved the opener "Apostrophe" as well as "Echidna's Arf Of You", "Black Page", "Inca Roads" "Don't Eat The Yellow Snow" and they even played "Magic Fingers" from 200 Motels! Loved every minute of it!

The version of "Bamboozled By Love" was REALLY HEAVY, and percussionist Billy Hulting's choice of notes in the solo for "Pound For A Brown" were superb! I was LOST in that solo!

Admittedly, I NEVER expected "Wind Up Workin' In A Gas Station" to be played. Total surprise! I never considered it to be one of FZ's stronger songs, so it was a bit of a shock, but ZPZ played it great, and we were into it!

To us, it looked like the band was genuinely having a good time (although drummer Joe Travers was ill apparently), and they seemed almost taken aback at the response they got from the Saskatoon audience. This was one of only THREE Zappa Plays Zappa "only" shows on this tour (and the only one in Canada) - we were truly lucky!

Interestingly, Dweezil asked in Frank had ever come to Saskatchewan, and there was a resounding "NO!" from the crowd. "Well, we're here now", Dweezil replied to much applause.

It was challenging to write this as briefly as possible, there is so much I could say! I'm just glad I had a chance to see a full show, because I missed the chance to see them in Calgary or Winnipeg last time around.

Thanks for coming!

I was with the gents above (even got the auto'd setlist!) and, although compared to them I'm a Zappa neophyte, I was treated to one of the greatest musical experiences of my life. To be only three feet away from Dweezil (front row!) and watching those solos (e.g. Inca Roads) was to bear witness to a virtuoso performance. Each of the musicians on the stage showed such mastery of the instruments they played; the material diverse and complex... a genuine tribute to the man and the music.
Again, I've only had the opportunity to hear maybe 15-20% of Zappa's catalogue so far, but seeing this show took a spark and blew it into a flame. Maybe I'm the kind of person Dweezil & Co. wanted to reach? I'm not as young as the "target" audience may have been (certainly not as young as the fellow who was invited on stage in what could be considered something that happens only in dreams, but actually took place before my very eyes), but I still came away with a greater appreciation of Frank Zappa's works and an even greater desire to hear more thereof! Even the crowd was "diverse": metalheads, hippies, golden oldies, young 'uns, you name it, all united under this music. Staggering.
Right off the hop, "Apostrophe" kicked my ass and sent me home crying (proverbially, of course); Pete the bass player looked like he was having the time of his life, playing that thing like a lead! "Montana" was something else, "Inca Roads" a thing of beauty (kudos to Scheila (did I spell that right?) and Ben on tackling the vox-as-an-instrument maelstrom that song requires! Never heard "Carolina Hardcore Ecstasy" before this show, but really loved it. The solos just proved what kind of skill these people possessed; a thing of beauty to behold (never seen a "vocalist" solo before, but what a cool way to do it!". The crowd must have been something for the band to enjoy as well, because it's rare that the song encore choice is left to the audience like it was; kudos to the band for asking (thanks for "Peaches en Regalia")! And then, for Dweezil, Scheila and Ben to stick around and meet the fans and sign auto's for the better part of twenty minutes? This is one of the classiest groups of musicians I have ever seen.
Thanks to you all for the experience! Even one of my friends in Edmonton who was a huge Dream Theater fan got to see you play, and he left after two songs of theirs because he said there was no way they could top ZPZ. Thank you for a truly incredible show!

A man approached a beautiful woman in a supermarket
and asked her, “You know, I've lost my wife here in
the supermarket. Can you please talk to me for a few
minutes?” The woman asked him, “Why?” “Oh,
you know, because every time I talk to a beautiful
woman, my wife will appear out of nowhere!”
