Showed started right on time.
Scale The Summit- technical talent, no vocals, a little repetitive for my taste. Bassist had a nice Modulus 6 string. Lots of potential. Need to add the dimension of words to their music to peak my interest more.
Big Elf - Fun stage presence. Front and center man with two keys on either side, good rapport with crowd. Loved his comment that his synth unit was 'a little bit like the Millenium Falcon' when it was acting quirky. He also suggested that we go online and steal the music in reference to the cost of putting on a tour- not sure how well that went over. Musically intriguing. Felt like I was seeing a bit of ELP mixed with Metallica. Medeski Martin and Wood came to mind also.
ZPZ- Sitting back near the boards, the vast overhang at the Chicago Theatre makes for some wicked harmonic issues. That was especially true for Pete. They did the best they could. DZ appeared to be playing the new smaller 'overseas' rig as opposed to the 'twin towers' we saw last year at The Morse Theatre (RIP). Hard to say which I like better- apples and oranges in terms of venue and acoustics. I can understand the smaller lighter rig on such a crowded tour though.
DZ again shined through his total lack of musical ego on stage, giving tons of room to the rest of the band for really taking the music into new spaces. Ben was just fine by me as a vocalist(loved his solo stuff), it felt natural and organic in terms of the evolution from the first tour in 2006 and into the present. No more alumni, new solo's, open improv, very much to my liking. Ms. G was her usual mindblowing self- an absolute thrill to see onstange, a musical prodigy. The crowd were brought to their feet when Portnoy came out, and stayed up all the way through Peaches. Portnoy clearly is a fan of The Composer. Portnoy and DZ had fun with some banter about the 'tender' nature of some of FZ's compositions.
I can't comment on Dream Theatre, had to leave early to get to bed. But I was sitting next to a father and his two teenage sons who both said they really enjoyed their first exposure to ZPZ. Gotta get a live CD/downloads out so these kids have something to go buy and hear this band. They like it, but they won't wait forever to get it. They are used to getting FOH mixes the next day via nugs.net already.
I know DZ wants perfection in the YCFOA downloads- and I urge him to continue that standard-as I have said before, I will wait however long it takes to get the rest of that tour ready for downloads. But it will aid the mission to get some of this out even in the less desirable FOH mixes if only to give the kids something with which to start. Send out another round of licenses for the 10-17-08 show, or just put it up for sale on nugs?
Looking forward to the next show. And DZ, if you read this- feel free to buy The Morse and get it re-opened. It is a shame that venue is sitting there empty.
Big thanks for coming back to Chicago, we love you all. How about three nights at The Aragon Ballroom? The Riviera? Or The Vic?
