Did you attend the ZPZ show with Dream Theater at the Chicago Theatre in Chicago?

Dweezil and the band love reading your reviews.

Please do not post in this thread if you did not attend the show.

Showed started right on time.

Scale The Summit- technical talent, no vocals, a little repetitive for my taste. Bassist had a nice Modulus 6 string. Lots of potential. Need to add the dimension of words to their music to peak my interest more.

Big Elf - Fun stage presence. Front and center man with two keys on either side, good rapport with crowd. Loved his comment that his synth unit was 'a little bit like the Millenium Falcon' when it was acting quirky. He also suggested that we go online and steal the music in reference to the cost of putting on a tour- not sure how well that went over. Musically intriguing. Felt like I was seeing a bit of ELP mixed with Metallica. Medeski Martin and Wood came to mind also.

ZPZ- Sitting back near the boards, the vast overhang at the Chicago Theatre makes for some wicked harmonic issues. That was especially true for Pete. They did the best they could. DZ appeared to be playing the new smaller 'overseas' rig as opposed to the 'twin towers' we saw last year at The Morse Theatre (RIP). Hard to say which I like better- apples and oranges in terms of venue and acoustics. I can understand the smaller lighter rig on such a crowded tour though.

DZ again shined through his total lack of musical ego on stage, giving tons of room to the rest of the band for really taking the music into new spaces. Ben was just fine by me as a vocalist(loved his solo stuff), it felt natural and organic in terms of the evolution from the first tour in 2006 and into the present. No more alumni, new solo's, open improv, very much to my liking. Ms. G was her usual mindblowing self- an absolute thrill to see onstange, a musical prodigy. The crowd were brought to their feet when Portnoy came out, and stayed up all the way through Peaches. Portnoy clearly is a fan of The Composer. Portnoy and DZ had fun with some banter about the 'tender' nature of some of FZ's compositions.

I can't comment on Dream Theatre, had to leave early to get to bed. But I was sitting next to a father and his two teenage sons who both said they really enjoyed their first exposure to ZPZ. Gotta get a live CD/downloads out so these kids have something to go buy and hear this band. They like it, but they won't wait forever to get it. They are used to getting FOH mixes the next day via nugs.net already.

I know DZ wants perfection in the YCFOA downloads- and I urge him to continue that standard-as I have said before, I will wait however long it takes to get the rest of that tour ready for downloads. But it will aid the mission to get some of this out even in the less desirable FOH mixes if only to give the kids something with which to start. Send out another round of licenses for the 10-17-08 show, or just put it up for sale on nugs?

Looking forward to the next show. And DZ, if you read this- feel free to buy The Morse and get it re-opened. It is a shame that venue is sitting there empty.

Big thanks for coming back to Chicago, we love you all. How about three nights at The Aragon Ballroom? The Riviera? Or The Vic?

ZPZ stole the show at the Chicago Theater! Being a life long Zappa fan, this comes as no surprise. The two lead in bands, Scale the Summit, and Big Elf are sure to be on the rise. It was refreshing to hear a band (STS) playing great music and not having any lyrics to bring it down. They just know how to jam. Big Elf can jam as well and is also alot of fun to watch. I'll be buying their music and seeing them whenever I can.
ZPZ amazes with their world class musicians and showmanship. Dweezil spent more time deferring to the reset of the band and directing instead of being the focal point himself. His jams were superb as were the rest of the band's solos. This is the band that should have been the main act over Dream Theater. The diversity of Frank's music truly makes any other band seem plain.
While it is obvious that DT are excellent musicians, their music realy seemed to sound alike from one song to the next. I believe that I will get some DT cd's and enjoy their music in measure. However, staying through the whole set was not to be. Even with the prospect of Dweezil ultimately joining the band for a jam was not enough to stand through an hour and a half of DT. It might have been okay if people would learn to sit down in the seats that they paid for and relax.
Zappa rules and I'll see him every chance that I get!

My first ZPZ show, gotta say it was the highlight of the night for me.
Haven't seen any of the bands before, but Z was the standout.
The quality of musicianship was incredible. I wanted 2 more hours.
Thanks for a brilliant performance.

DZ, any chance of getting a copy of Ride My Face To Chicago.
What an intro - classic. I need to hear it again!
For that matter, I'd love to own the set - pls consider releasing it?
tks and best of luck on the tour, davebo

FYI Davebo:

There is mighty fine version of 'Ride My Face To Chicago' on the double live disc release 'You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore Vol 3".

I think the biggest impediment to getting some of this ZPZ material released has been the nature of the recent touring schedule combined with the unexpected lineup changes. When I think about what this band has pulled off it still boggles my mind. Losing a keyboardist and vocalist, only replacing the vocalist, and then spreading the keyboard parts out, really a sign of their superior muscianship. Having seen every one of the touring lineups of the ZPZ I admit I was wondering how it would be possible for SG to play all the keys parts and still blow that horn. I was delighted when I realized that a big chunk of keys got moved over to BH and how wonderfully he adapted those parts. I had a bit of a 'well duh' moment when it hit me that it was just a different form of percussion work.

DZ told me last year that he really wanted to get out an official live release compiled from the 08 lineup along with all the downloads from the YCFOA tour. Plus, I gather the 'Son of Roxy and Elswhere' DVD project is moving along since there is a preview clip for that on the website now too. I think, now that the current tour schedule is completed as of tonight, and once DZ gets a chance to spend some time with his family again, we will see him back at work in the studio working to get this material available.

Personally I am looking forward to another plain old domestic tour with ZPZ headlining and DZ back on his bigger rig- I loved the sound of the rig in late 08, just so rich and deep in tone and color.

Agreed that they stole the show. Jaime's tone was absolutely crushing cementing my Shiva lust and his licks were tasty as "Mothers" apple pie (come on i had to.) Dweezil's sound through the Fractal pre was completley adaquate although it did lack the superior saturation and harmonics of both the cornford and fuchs rigs. Went from 3rd row in the pit all the way to the back of the house because apparently i was a little too fanboy for the yuppie scumbags around me and they were unimpressed with my singing and generally animated behavior so they had the security guards remove me! Stage volume was far superior to the PA. Joe Travers is still my hero. He makes it look way too easy kids, and while Portnoy is a great drummer, i would have just as soon heard JT play "Peaches" as his feel is superior for the music. Aaron Arntz was sorely missed. Although the band didnt miss a beat without him, his superior musicianship added amazing qualities and fracased humor to the show. Out of the four ZPZ shows i have seen, it was the weakest, but brought Frank's music to a roomful of kids who may not have understood the debt they owed him otherwise and to be fair it is Dream Theater's show. (still wished JP would have jammed a lil with DZ and JK) Dweezil and Co. have never failed to move me emotionally during a show from the heights of ecstacy to the depths of sorrow. A fitting tribute to the Last great composer of the 20th century, may this crew continue until everyone in the world has the chance to experience and appreciate Frank's music live. Thanks ZPZ and keep it coming!

For showing the concern to soldiers’ life, General Barton made a casual check to the warrior dining room, nike air max tn he pointed at a cauldron saying," let me taste the soup inside.""
