This was my second ZPZ show at the Neighborhood Theatre, and they completely topped what was a stellar show back in 2008.
Ben is an incredible addition to the band. He has such amazing vocal range, and completely fits in with this band. I'll take him over Ray "leave them high and dry" White any day. The setlist was completely different, with only three songs played from last time, which makes me appreciate the attention to details like that. Although I would have been completely happy with the same stuff from last time, it was a real treat to hear this particular choice of songs.
Nothing at all standard about the show. Every song was done incredibly with no cutting of corners, precision, and branching out by the band at the most appropriate of times. I could only imagine the difficulty of the task of recreating the songs while staying true to Frank's versions. (Something which no other Zappa tribute acts could come close to doing).
My favorite part of the show was Apostrophe. I was completely beside myself the whole show, and am grateful for my body's natural ability to breathe. They played well over 2 and a half hours, and now I'm stuck with a case of the Zappa Plays Zappa blues, because it will be a long time before I hear any kind of music or see any live show that comes near what I saw on the stage last night.
I sat on the right side of the stage behind Scheila. Watching the band interact, and seeing them close up while playing their parts with the utmost precision made the show that much more enjoyable. I hope ZPZ tours for many more years to come.
I would like to give a special shout out to the muffin men. I had the opportunity to get to know them a bit during the 2008 show, and was glad to get to spend a little time with them at last night's show. We need more people like the muffin men at shows. They are some of the kindest, most friendly people one will ever meet, and I wish them and their families great health and prosperity, and hope to see them again soon.
The icing on the cake was having the opportunity to go to the front of the stage, shake their hands, and speak with most of the band. I appreciated how they made themselves accessible to the fans. You don't see that much these days, and it was wonderful of them to do so. They were all such friendly folks.
Thank you Dweezil, Ben, Sheila, Pete, Billy, Jamie, Joe, the soundmen, the Neighborhood Theatre, and all who made the show possible. Best of wishes to you all.
Music is the best!
