The one word I would use to describe last night's show: FANTASTIC!
I saw FZ play in the 80's (Albuquerque; Santa Fe), and last night's show displayed every bit as much of the sheer energy coupled with unreal precision that was FZ's trademark. I really like what DZ et al. have done to re-interpret the originals. While preserving the overall feel and intent of the original songs, the improv sections are (in my opinion) actually more "accessible" than when FZ was still playing. This is not a knock on FZ - Frank's solos were incredible, but over my head a lot of the time. DZ, who is every bit the technician that his father was, has his OWN style that I personally find more melodic and thematic than the original.
Of course, the musicianship was simply phenomenal. Every member of the band demonstrated the level of talent that, quite FRANKly, I have ONLY heard in a Zappa performance. NO OTHER BAND (including groups like the Dead, the Police, etc.) has ever come close to matching that level, at least as far as I can tell.
Thank you, Dweezil, and the rest of your fine ensemble, for a performance that literally had me crying tears of joy. I will be moving to Eugene, OR later this year, and I see that you will play there on this same tour. Thus, I'm hopeful that you'll include Eugene in future tours, so that I'll have a chance to hear you again (soon!).
I share FZ's skepticism of religious beliefs, so it's hard for me to say whether or not Frank's consciousness has survived, but if it has, I'm sure that Frank is proud of Dweezil and what he is doing with the FZ repertoire.
