Did you attend the THIRD ZPZ show at the Roxy in West Hollywood, CA?

Dweezil and the band love reading your reviews.

Please do not post in this thread if you did not attend the show.

OK so this is my first post on this board, be kind.

I have seen ZPZ on all three tours now, and this was by far, the best show I have seen them play. DZ has really settled into the role of band leader and has a vibe onstage that I can only describe as confident. He is taking on more of his dad's vocal parts, and moving into the solo areas with added freedom.

For example; he performed the solo in Black Napkins with additional feel and energy that I think lacked on the DVD/CD version from the first tour. As a long time Zappa fan, I can only say that what he has taken on is huge and he is absolutely doing the music justice.

Overall, the band has really jelled as a unit, and feels like a true band, rather than guys who were hired to play the parts (not to diss them from earlier tours). They all did a huge job last night, and I for one cannot wait to see the DVD.

The guy who won the guitar, was actually a guitar player, and he played really well! DZ was smiling the whole time they were jamming. Also - Steve Vai was in attendance, but he did not join them on stage... Oh well.

On a personal note, this show was a birthday gift for me. I never got to see FZ but, the gentleman who took me last night has also attended the previous two tours with me, and is one of my closest friends since 1984. He had seen many FZ shows in England, NY and Los Angeles, and is convinced that "this band is performing FZ'z music the only way there is... THE RIGHT WAY!"

Billy The Mountain was performed perfectly, word-for-word note-for-note jaw dropping perfect. The Sarah Palin reference was very funny and totally broke Ray White up. I voted for Roxy/Elsewhere tunes so seeing Pygmy Twylyte, Village of the Sun, Echidna Arf Of You and Don't You Ever Wash That Thing? played in that order made my whole night!

Further, seeing them do Flakes and BHAFA from Sheik Yerboti was uber-cool!!!! And Schelia singing lead on Dirty Love was a real treat for me, I have been crushing on her since the first tour and sitting a few feet from her (4th row, dead center) was awesome!!!

One last thing... Schelia as Mary in Fembot In A Wet T-Shirt was so over the top and hilarious, I thought I was gonna pop! DZ even said mid-song, that she sounded so much like Dale Bozzio, it was freaking him out!

I can only guess what kind of amazing coolness will descend tonight...

We who attended are the lucky few. Thank you to the band - it was your best yet.

That was one of the most intense and beautiful nights of music that I've ever experienced in my life. The band was in TOP form and Dweezil's playing was just mind boggling. The version of Pygmy Twylyte was probably one of the more intense versions that I've ever heard, very nice treat. PLUS PLAYING FOR 3 HOURS NON-STOP, absolutely incredible!!!!! Can't wait for New Years Eve with Les Claypool! Peace!

This is the third year I've seen ZPZ, and it was by far the most fully realized show yet. Everyone onstage is a Master Musician, and Dweezil just cuts heads! Having seen Frank around 20 times ( my folks used to drop me off at the Shrine Exposition Hall when I was 13), it's a gas to hear these folks slide effortlessly from one era to another, breathing real fire into these songs! Thank you all for one of the most enjoyable nights of music ever!

What is there to say? That was my fifth time seeing them, and they continue to improve. Dweezil is channeling Frank like never before, and the band is getting tighter and playing looser every tour... just amazing. Couldn't ask for a better venue either... I was practically in Scheila's beautiful, talented lap, having been fortunate enough to sit in the front row.

I want to thank the band for continuing on for a few songs after you had obviously reached sheer exhaustion - Dweezil admitting as much. Your efforts are and were greatly appreciated! I just hope it didn't negatively affect the next evening's performance.

Frank wrote the greatest music the world has even known, and ZPZ performs it with integrity, dedication and perhaps most impressive of all, just the right degree of humor.

Thank you all. See you at the San Diego H.O.B. in March, and look forward to the next DVD.

Arf!

Drove 400 miles each way to see this show and it was well worth it. The venue is tiny as can be. I started out the show in the second row off to the side but then went to the back for a better sound mix and I was still only 20-30 feet from the band.

The performance was incredible. I agree with the earlier review that stated that they are getting tighter and sounding looser. Each year I attend at least one show and I have never been disappointed. Dweezil's solos are improving from their already great state. One or two minor vocal flubs during Billy the Mountain (please include it on the DVD anyway!) Dweezil was exhausted by the end and still pulled off (pun intended?) an incredible solo for the final number of G-Spot Tornado.

I wished I could have seen at least one more show and am even considering braving Les Claypool and his crowd (not a fan) for the New Year's show in my area.

Anyone have any info on the Lumpy Money release?
Peace out.

I'd like to add that the thing that resonated most with me is how the band is really capturing the Spirit of a Mother's show. It's much more than just playing the songs well. The mood swings from hilarious absurdity to bone chilling darkness, exaltation to despair. Everyone on stage would have fit in one of Frank's bands, and Dweezil.....he's The Man. It's Frank Zappa's Music, but you folks have really made it your own. Rave on!

Got to sit in the front row and my face hurt at the end of the show from smiling so much.

Fantastic performances, and during one particularly sweet Dweezil solo I looked to my right and a fellow listener actually had tears coming down his face. That's some pretty powerful music! :)

This concert was EXCELLENT!!!

During the second tour, when I saw them in Berkeley, Dweezil gave me one of his "Gary Coleman" picks after the concert...

I was telling my Dad on the way back from that concert that I was going to keep that pick, and someday I was going to play music with Zappa with the same pick...

its pretty crazy how things work out...

Before we left for the long drive to southern California, I made sure to bring that pick with me...

Hollywood is a crazy town... i love it... its been good to me so far...

Hell, my first night in that town i found myself jamming at the Roxy with Dweezil Zappa and being filmed in HD...

I won the awesome opportunity to play music with the son of Frank Zappa, on the 35th anniversary of Frank Zappa playing at the Roxy...

IT WAS SO F#@*ING COOL!!!!!!!!

...

I feel incredibly blessed...

After the show, I talked to Ray White, and he remembered me from the Berkeley concert... He razzed me about not calling to audition for the band...(funny story)

I met Steve Vai and asked him what he thought of my guitar playing.

He told me it was "entertaining."

Coming from Steve Vai, I considered that to be an incredible compliment... and I also considered it to imply that there is room to grow... and that I could be more than just "entertaining" if I work hard...
I could become "excellent" or "amazing" if I practice enough...

My quick interaction with Steve Vai really made me think... and helped give me perspective on the situation...

Thanks Steve.

I met Dweezil again afterwards, and I just told him that his fathers music inspires me... and I thanked him for playing it...

I asked him if I could audition...

This experience has really just turned me into a force to be reckoned with when it comes to music... i am FOCUSED... it has been a catalyst for the evolution of my music.

i feel like FZ was watching over in some sort of "conceptual continuity" kind of way and saying, "Go For It..."

...

The next night i met Michael Sherwood, and he told me something i considered to be very profound... i was talking about being able to play with Zappa, and i said to him, "I'm very lucky..."

He told me in response, "Luck, is when Opportunity meets Preparation."

...

The entire concert was amazing, but I'm still just amazed that what happened even HAPPENED...

it was TOO MUCH!!!

In retrospect, I just want to say that it was an honor... the whole experience... down to every person I interacted with... the entire experience was just perfection...

and I am very grateful to have been given such an opportunity.

Thank you.
