Hi,
I must personally say that I wasn't very impressed by the gig. They all seemed quite tired (very understandable though, lots of gigs) and they did not play well as a band. G-spot tornado was the only impressive performance as a band of the night. Whenever Frank appeared on screen the show really had a meaning. It was a very good idea and it worked well. It really felt like Frank was there with us for a while.
Ray White was the star of the show. He sang amazingly and really showed good attitude and humor. Thank you so much Ray for participating! When he came in to sing City of Tiny lights as the third song the concert really started for me.
A very nice surprise was also the other guitarist, Jamie. Nice solo in Dupree's Paradise! A real shame that he couldn't stand out more, he's talent could have helped the whole band to step up a little. He's sound was the only one that really was good and suited this kind of music (well of course Ray's singing sound is the greatest in the world!!). He and Ray were the only ones in my oppinion who performed genuinely as themselves, or atleast so it seemed.
Th overall sound was something you would expect from a modern pop band. The bass was too hifi, with very smooth warm low end. The beautiful lines of many songs couldn't really be heard because there was no mids or highs in the sound. And no percussive elements what you would hear in for ex in Scot Thunes playing. Except for the uninteresting slap solo in dupree's paradise were he tried to slap a Victor Wooten -kind of solo over the 19/16 rif from "Keep it Greasey".
Joe was tight in his playing but did not have the drive Frank's drummers had. And the solo in dupree's paradise wasn't very good. Propably just because eh was tired. Heard him play amazingly in other projects.
The overall feeling of the band was that they were tired. Sheila and Billy played ofthen in poor time and so did Dweezil. The humor was just not funny (except when Ray was involved!) and Scheilas waitrice -act was just something that couldn't have been funny to anyone, least of all for the band.
Dweezil played basically the same polished pentatonic-rock/blues -licks over and over again in every solo he did except in one song which I think was "Zoot Allures" if I remember correctly. There he played a little bit like Frank and that was more interesting. Dweezil's sound in the other songs was very modern, undynamic and smooth and had nothing to do with the sound Frank had.
I think Dweezil's "conducting" was a little corny especially in Dupree's paradise. The show would be better without the conducting. His daughter conducted well though
Aaron played pretty well but was very trad. jazz -kind of player which really didnt suite the songs. His going crazy -act was really funny in one of he's solos (the one where one key got stuck

) and he traded nice phrases with Scheila in Dupree's paradise solo section when they got the chance.
Scheila played ok. She sang very well backrounds and never sang out of tune. But she doesn't have the carisma to sing Dirty love. In "dog meat" and "G-spot tornado" her changing instruments all the time was interesting and fun to look at. She did those songs very well!
I hope I haven't offended anyone with these lines, that really wasn't the meaning. I critisize the show from my musician point of view and many will say that it is a very narrow point of view indeed. I'm very happy for Dweezil and the band that inspite of what I said about the show A LOT OF PEOPLE enjoyed it from the bottom of their hearts, I could tell.
All the musicians seemed talented but many need to either consentrate better or practice more. You can't let tiredness show like that! I hope you will play better in the States.
Rock on!
