Did you attend this show at the Roseland in Portland?

Dweezil and the band would love to read your reviews.

Please do not post in this thread if you did not attend the show.

I know there's likely another thread that pertains exclusively to the subject of the DVD, but i dunno where that is.....

Can someone please tell me:
Are they selling the DVD at the shows?
Is it available in NTSC format (as opposed to PAL)?
Does anyone know the price?

Thanks in advance, and appologies for highjacking this thread!

The not so secret words for this nights show were;
Cheese Wiz, Wheat Thins, Abe Bogotá, Chicken Pussy and plumpkin plinkerton pluptin, Plumptin, plankerschwine or plumperknicole. Also a mental image of Britney spears beaver had been suggested as "What's new in Portland".
The Illinois Enema Bandit was all hands on Scheila Gonzalez, looked allot like Billy Hulting. Aaron Arnts made a series of echoes originating from something that sounded quite like a duck, duck Goose? Jamie Kime had a special (light) it was beautiful to see him work. Pete was slapping out some serious bass to behold, thank you Mr. Griffin. Why this gentlemen behind me called you dirty.. I don't know. Joe Travers had some serious rythemetic value to keep it all in good time, vocally apropos as well. With Ray White as special guest you could imagine the good time had by all.
Audience participation song "Heavy Duty Judy", I of course really enjoyed throwing out an extra heavy bass lingers on Judyyeh. Thanks for the moment of fame. But of course the person who was most famous was down in front and was told YOU will REALLY like this DVD. I can't wait to get mine as they were sold out of course being one of the featured venues.
In brief, without the set list which I am sure someone will add later, Mr. Dweezil Zappahas made yet another main stay in the institute of modern music played by really fine modern musicians.
Thank you for your time.
Thank you for the moment.
Thank you for the music.
Music is the Best!
Yours;
Cabbage patch

P.S.
I would like to thank to thank the merchandise girl for turning in my lost wallet.
And of course the Roseland event staff for letting me back in the venue to hold it once again and see two of my heroes at the bar Pete and Jamie.
I know now how a fan must feel when he can't get close enough to say Thank you for a really fine show!

P.P.S.S.
Edited 4 times, didn't change a thing. I did get my DVD It is good, very good. But live is just a little bit better as always. But being able to watch my DVD anytime I want.... PRICELESS

Dear Dweezil and ZPZ Band,

I know I'm breaking the rules here by posting on the Portland concert review forum, but........ I attended the Denver show and was not able to post immediately after and I don't want my comments to get lost in a past review.

As I said, I saw your show in Denver several nights ago and was suitably blown away. You are all phenomenal and the set and performances were everything that anyone could hope to expect.

Last year I traveled to Seattle and caught the show at the Paramount; it was the best I've ever witnessed; I shuffled out speechless, my jaw dragging the concrete. This past August I traveled to Phoenix and saw the show there at the Dodge Theater then again in Denver just a few nights ago. Great shows all and I travel to see them whenever I can.

I wonder, however, if you'd consider a stop here in my home town of Salt Lake City on your future tours? Kingsbury Hall would be the perfect venue. I'm sure you passed right through town on your way to Portland from Denver. Don't get me wrong, I love to travel and meet my other Zappa-fan friends in their cities come showtime, but I'd love to host my own concert party here.

Yeah I know, Suzy Creamcheese is from Salt Lake, but so are the Fowler brothers. Besides, the Mo Tab Choir just ain't cuttin' it for me anymore.
Please......... I'm begging; I won't tell anyone you bailed out at the ending of G-Spot the other night ;-).

Sincerely, though, I appreciate what you all are doing and am glad to be able to participate as an audience member.

Thanks all for another great concert! I kind of live out in the sticks, so I don't get to a lot of shows, but this show and the September show in LA are definitely the best concerts I've ever seen. I saw the show in LA with some old friends and had a great time, but kept thinking that I wish my daughter were there to see/hear it -- she plays piano and is learning trombone and was getting FZ music in the womb while other poor fetuses were listening to Mozart, or whatever is supposed to make them smart.

Anyway, when I saw that ZPZ was playing Portland the day after her 10th birthday, I knew we had to go. One friend said it was like when Homer bought Marge a bowling ball for her birthday, but I said "No way, man. She'll love it." And I was right! (I also bought her a parakeet, just to be on the safe side.)

If you are wondering whether to take a child to a ZPZ show, stop wondering and GO! We brought some ear plugs (which didn't last long), and I rehearsed my answer to the question: "What's an enema bandit, Daddy?" But it appears to have been an entirely wholesome experience for both of us. She thought the enema bag "skit" was funny, so I think she may know more than I gave her credit for. I did have to explain Abe Vigoda, which wasn't too embarrassing for me, and so far she hasn't asked what chicken pussy is, which is good because I think only Mr. Ray White knows that. (No "funny smells" to explain either.)

We had to watch from the floor, so we stood where she could at least see Scheila most of the time (Great role model!) and I lifted her above the crowd as much as my back/arms could stand during the more exciting bits -- there were a lot of exciting bits, so I'm a pretty sore daddy. (Security wouldn't allow her on my shoulders, but they were very nice about it.) She says her favorite numbers were G-Spot Tornado, San Ber'dino, and Dupree's (what fun!). She liked DZ's description of how Frank first played G-Spot for him, and she probably recognizes that tune from the womb... She didn't know most of the other songs, but really seemed to enjoy the spectacle of it all. And she says she'll never complain that I'm playing my music too loud again.

We sure hope to see ZPZ again next year (or sooner) and we might even bring the actual womb along next time.

By the way, I recommend wearing loose fitting pants to your next ZPZ show. The super low frequencies, especially during Pygmy Twylyte, set up a rather curious sensation in the trouser air spaces. Very clean feeling sound!

I'm another fan who was too young to ever experience Zappa live and in person (27 now, 20 when I got into the music). Every time I think about what this group is out there doing I get choked up. Its like with any number of artists that I know I can't see because they are gone, but then one day you get to experience what you thought was impossible. Getting to see Frank on the screen and hear him through the amps was such a thrill (we didn't have this at the dvd shoot last year). I couldn't say which experience was better because I loved seeing both Napoleon Murphy Brock/Steve Vai/Bozzio and Ray White. I wouldn't wish away either night for the other. Enough can't be said about all of the players but Scheila Gonzalez stood out for me this year. Last year my eyes were on Dweezil and Steve Vai much of the time, but this year I had a great view of Scheila. She is an incredible musician to watch. I could go on all day, but alas I must do some work. Muffin man left me on such a high note! Don't miss these shows if you have the chance! If you miss these shows you better know you should feel regret for passing it up! Yes they had the dvds, yes it was the format for the states, but someone above said something about sold out? 35 bucks at the show and on the website. Worth it? Hell yes! 3 hours plus with plenty of tunes from both Seattle and Portland. Thank you so much Dweezil and Co, both for the great two nights and picking us to put down on DVD.

I could write a short novel here but I'll just do it in list fashion instead:

As mentioned above, it was nice to get in the venue before the show started unlike last year. (thankfully we got to hear Florentine again at the end last time, so it wasn't a total wash). The weather was the same, but this time I didn't "get" to experience nearly as much cold hometown rain.

(already failed the list. haha)

Are you traveling with your own PA this tour? Unless the Roseland made changes since my last visit, I can only assume the PA infront of the house stacks were ZPZ material.

EXCELLENT choice, but from front and center, it was hard to hear the vocals (of course). I have seen bands that use in-ear monitors put several small 2x10 cabinets across the front of the stage lip as a "front fill" for those who wish for a great view with great sound. (moe. at the Fox Theater in Atlanta comes to mind. That stage is HUGE)

Like my review from last year, I maintain that you should play a show at the Crystal Ballroom, unless somewhere in the past there is some ugly spot that caused a rift between McMenamins and the ZFTrust. It's just a better vibed room.

I was of course completely delighted to see a whole different songlist than last year (not that I expected anything less), including impressive choices like Dog/Meat and Dupree's.

The best thing about Zappa's catalog is how expansive it is, so despite my collection, there were several songs that I'd never heard before. :) :)

The band is so well rehearsed, it almost seems like you're lipsynching when playing with the FZ videos, but obviously it's the band just kicking ass.

We had a great time, just like last year, and, similarly, walked away feeling refreshed that there are still touring acts that take real pride in creating actual factual music, rather than just radio sounds.

And as a side note, regarding kids at the shows: it was funny when all that stuff about chicken pussy and blumpkins (look it up on urbandictionary (apparently I can't say the extension but it starts with "c" and ends with "om") was going down, the guy next to me had his 10 year old son with him, but they didn't spend any time talking about it - I think the kid was just in awe (until he passed out standing up, mid-dogmeat! :) of the entire spectacle.

Keep coming back, and thanks above all for listening to complaints in trying to improve the sound at what amounts to some of the most abysmal in Portland! The effort definitely made a big, positive difference.

(and MAN can Ray White still belt it out!)

I saw the show last year on my/Franks birthday with my son. I dont know if that experience can ever be topped. The show this year that I went to with a freind of mine was every bit as good. The Roseland event staff was on their best behavior. The band seemed to be totally relaxed and having as much fun as we were. The set list was great and the video of Frank in back soooo cool and soooo well done. Just a completely AWSOME show!! Personal highlights, G Spot Tornado and Your Mama. This band is so good that you can take away Napoleon M Brock, Terry Bozzio and Steve Vai and add Ray White without losing anything. Ray Whites vocals and guitar fit with this band perfectly. Dweezil, You got everything right. Frank would be proud. As a long time FZ fan, I cant thank you enough for bringing this great music back to the stage. Leaving the show this year with a DVD of last years show in hand........the (suzy) creamcheese on my muffin doeth runneth over!
