I could write a short novel here but I'll just do it in list fashion instead:
As mentioned above, it was nice to get in the venue before the show started unlike last year. (thankfully we got to hear Florentine again at the end last time, so it wasn't a total wash). The weather was the same, but this time I didn't "get" to experience nearly as much cold hometown rain.
(already failed the list. haha)
Are you traveling with your own PA this tour? Unless the Roseland made changes since my last visit, I can only assume the PA infront of the house stacks were ZPZ material.
EXCELLENT choice, but from front and center, it was hard to hear the vocals (of course). I have seen bands that use in-ear monitors put several small 2x10 cabinets across the front of the stage lip as a "front fill" for those who wish for a great view with great sound. (moe. at the Fox Theater in Atlanta comes to mind. That stage is HUGE)
Like my review from last year, I maintain that you should play a show at the Crystal Ballroom, unless somewhere in the past there is some ugly spot that caused a rift between McMenamins and the ZFTrust. It's just a better vibed room.
I was of course completely delighted to see a whole different songlist than last year (not that I expected anything less), including impressive choices like Dog/Meat and Dupree's.
The best thing about Zappa's catalog is how expansive it is, so despite my collection, there were several songs that I'd never heard before.
The band is so well rehearsed, it almost seems like you're lipsynching when playing with the FZ videos, but obviously it's the band just kicking ass.
We had a great time, just like last year, and, similarly, walked away feeling refreshed that there are still touring acts that take real pride in creating actual factual music, rather than just radio sounds.
And as a side note, regarding kids at the shows: it was funny when all that stuff about chicken pussy and blumpkins (look it up on urbandictionary (apparently I can't say the extension but it starts with "c" and ends with "om") was going down, the guy next to me had his 10 year old son with him, but they didn't spend any time talking about it - I think the kid was just in awe (until he passed out standing up, mid-dogmeat!

of the entire spectacle.
Keep coming back, and thanks above all for listening to complaints in trying to improve the sound at what amounts to some of the most abysmal in Portland! The effort definitely made a big, positive difference.
(and MAN can Ray White still belt it out!)
