Did you attend this show at the Paramount in Seattle?

Dweezil and the band would love to read your reviews.

Please do not post in this thread if you did not attend the show.

Got into FZ in '90 (too late!) but I just saw the next best thing.
Secret Words (I may be forgetting a few):
- Nude Bullfighting
- Parcheesi
- Damned If You Do, Damned If You Don't
- The Monktail
and the winner by frequency of use:
- BLARK!

Thank You DZ, for allowing me a glimpse of what I thought I would never experience. The band was tight!

P.S. Scheila, you are my absolute hero.

They were selling the DVD - lots of them - at the show last night for $35. I assume it's not the PAL version or many people will be unhappy. Great moment when Dweezil spotted the dancing dude from last year and the guy ran down front and hopped the barrier to shake Dweezil's hand, then hopped back out before security could get nervous. I also sat near the guy who made the beautiful hand-made pumpkin guitar for the Zappa family. He was there with his young daughter. These things help make it feel like a personal event. The positive audience energy and love at the end of the show was palpable.

Man, they've jelled even further as a band since last year. I felt an overall ease that wasn't there to the same degree last year. Not surprising given all the touring they've been doing. And DZ's playing is that much more effortless, dynamic, and flowing. I was absolutely transported to another realm during Zoot Allures. The sound was great, and loud. Like NMB last year, Ray White was outstanding in every way. Frank really knew how to pick 'em I guess. Thanks so much to the whole ZPZ crew.

I love the Paramount, but sure would love to be able to stand and move more during the show. Finally during the Muffin Man outro we got to stand and groove along with the band. Any chance a future Paramount show would use the open floor arrangement?

Amazing show - who's going to post a setlist? I'm curious about the Portland setlist too.

I was at the show after having seen the show in Portland last year.

This one was better. I loved Vai and Bozzio as guests on the last tour, but they really weren't needed - and that's not meant to be taken in a negative way at all.

The show was marvelous. I was talking to a friend beforehand and mentioned I'd love to hear Ship Ahoy live, but really doubted that it would make an appearance. You can't imagine how big the smile was on my face when Dweezil started to play it.

Great, great, great show. Words really do fail me.

The other phrase was "carne asade".

Can't wait to get the DVD when it hits the website.

Thanks, thanks, thanks for 3 hours of amazing music. Marry me Schiela! :-P

Cheers

Rob

I picked up the DVD at the Dallas Palladium show. It was $35 plus tax.
And yes, it is NTSC format.

This DVD is a must have for all Zappa (and ZPZ) fans. To quote the liner notes, "This program was orginally filmed in HD video at 23,976 frames per second and 1080 lines of resolution. The music was recorded at 48KHz and 24-bit high resolution audio." So, what you get is an incredible final DVD.

One final note...there is a great one-on-one interview with Dweezil, and a heart-felt interview where Steve Vai thanks Dweezil for all that he has done to bring Franks music to the masses (and the next generation). You eye's will surely 'well up' when you you see this. I teared up at points during the video...just like I did at the show.

DZ, from all of us...Thank you!

Was privileged to see ZPZ last night in Seattle -- they rocked the Paramount! Dweezil's playing has improved and he had some incredible solos. Ray White was great guest to the line-up. The band was tight (...it was ladies night...) and played their hearts out -- good example was Dupree's Paradise, featuring solos from everyone but DZ and Ray. While conducting, DZ reminded me of his pop ... and I wondered what he must have felt when FZ was projected on to the screen (for Stinkfoot, Cosmik Debris)....

It was a great way to spend a Monday night, and it reminded me of the theme from the Just Another Band From LA show -- that it's f***ing great to be alive! I hope they hit Seattle again next year.

Fanatastic show!

I thought the show was slow to really get rolling. After the opener of Stinkfoot, I thought that My Guitar Wants To Kill Your Momma was a bit plodding or lifeless. Maybe it was the mix, maybe it didn't have that sneering teenage obnoxiousness, I don't know what it was.

But things rapidly improved, and I'd say the last half to two thirds of the show were electric. The tight instrumentals (Dog/Meat, G-Spot Tornado etc) were amazing (and my favorite parts of the show). The down and dirty rock numbers were thrilling, the silly stuff was greatly entertaining (the Blerk background vocals were great), the improvisations were smoking. The vocal showcases and improvisations especially showed that the ZPZ tour continues with the Zappa tradition of pulling together great musicians, utilizing their individual strengths and talents, and challenging them to reach beyond.

Ray's a fantastic vocalist, it was great seeing him on stage again doing this music.

The final instrumental bit of the main set - the long Dweezil solo after Pygmy Twylyte - was especially memorable. Each of the band members was rocking out, totally absorbed in their instruments, eyes turned inwards, but communicating and conversing through the music.

The DVD sold out before most of us got a chance to get our hands on one, sadly; it was frustrating hearing it mentioned so often during the show, knowing that I wouldn't be able to get my hot little hands on one. I'll have to order a copy and be patient.

Exceptional show last night. The band continues to gel and certainly can hold their own without the need for multiple guests as in 06', though Ray was a wonderful addition on the vocal side.

I was really taken by the improvement in DZ's soloing this year, both in the peaceful confidence he portrays, and the extreme level of finesse he has achieved.

The high points for me:

Carolina Hardcore - Intense and very "melodic" solo.

Dog/Meat and G-spot

Zoots Allures, with transition right into Ship Ahoy. DZ has studied these carefully and it really showed....note for note perfect. Frank would have been impressed!

Pygmy Twylite...Weird composition, very edgy, perhaps a bit Van Halenized.

Watching DZ watch his Dad play the Muffin Man solo.

Thanks to DZ and the Band for again making this an epic live music experience.

:D Thank you Dweezil and company for rocking my socks off last night!
I was the guy in the Baby Snakes T-Shirt who gave the phrase-Damned if you do, Damned if you don't-Thanks for using it in the song-Stupid Love Song!! Unfortunately I only got to see Frank 3 times before he was so rudely taken away from us, but I can say that Dweezil and the rest of the group show all of the energy and diversity (? for lack of a better term) in the merriment happening on stage that I witnessed during Frank's shows! And to see Dweezil's face watching Frank play the solos only reinforces what he said on last year's tour, that this is definitely a labor of love for him! :P It's obvious in yer face Dweez!! :P I brought my G/F and her 13 year old son with me and I believe you have a new fan!! Again, thanks for such a great show last night-I'm looking forward to seeing you again next year, I'll do my best to make it to Vegas, Denver and back here in Seattle! I just got back home to the east side of the state (SPOKANE) and am going to settle down and watch the ZPZ DVD I purchased at the show!! I can never hear enough of Frank's music!! I especially like the orchestral works while on driving trips!!
:!: :D THANKS AGAIN---I LOVE IT!!! :D :!:

OOPS--I forgot--the DVD was available and it is, indeed, NTSC format! And only a mere $35.00!! ENJOY!!

ZAPPA PLAYS ZAPPA returned to Seattle for the second time in as many years. Had seat 1 row 15 dead center of Dweezil. Years ago I was introduced to The Mothers of Invention and Alice Cooper via the best buck I ever spent by sending away for "ZAPPED"! I had seen Frank play his first Halloween gig at the Felt Forum in Madison Square Garden in 1974. Last years ZPZ show had Napoleon Murphey Brock on vocals and a good chunk from the 74' show came to life as he had been the vocalist back then. I saw the Mothers a week later on Election Day in Allentown, PA and it was a different show which was awesome. If you loved Frank's shows.... well I don't need to tell you, right?
It was a terrific show especially since there were no repeats from last year and lots of favorites sprang to life. Show opener was STINK FOOT with Frank singing and playing via movie screen with the band playing along and went right into MY GUITAR WANTS TO KILL YER MAMA and musicianship was that of listening to the album. CIty of Tiny Lights had special guest Ray White on vocals. Everything tight and dead on. Other favorites that came along were MAGIC FINGERS from 200 Motels, Uncle Remus, Pygmy Twilight, Joe's Garage, Dog Breath, Wind Up Working in a Gas station, Zoot Alures, Willie the Pimp and a block from Absolutely Free: Suzy Creamcheese, Brown Shoes Don't Make It and America Drinks and Goes Home. Frank came back via the magic of motion pictures and the band played along with Cosmic Debris and Muffin Man. Everyone got to solo on Dupree's Paradise and the Illinois Enema Bandit was thrown in for good measure, Dweezil was presented with a Barking Pumpkin electric guitar crafted by a local fan. Dweezil once again played an SG and two Stratocasters. The 3+ hours flew by rapidly. Splendid time was had by all. Also the DVD from last years Paramount show and one in Oregon was on sale and I can't wait to tear into that puppy as it's a shade past 2:00am..... p.s. Last month I was able to attend Alice Cooper's Halloween show in Phoenix and picked up two bottles of "Absolutely Free Beer". I wanted to keep them intact, but had to abide by the 3oz. liquid carry-on luggage rule. The beer: Starts out nice and sweet and turns bitter... like life.

Aaaaagggghhh! I bought the DVD at the Paramount and got 2 number two discs!! Is there anyone out there that got 2 number one discs? If so, please post a reply and we'll figure out a way to swap one of your number ones for one of my number twos. Dweezil, if you could slap whoever packaged this with a mudshark and make them send me a number one disc it would be much appreciated and I promise I'll go see you again at the Paramount next year!

The show was fantastic. I cracked up when Ray White brought out the enema kit during Illinois Enema Bandit and started pointing at various people in the audience. Pygmy Twylyte totally blew me away. The intensity kept building and building until I thought the band would explode. Loved Sheila and Ray vocals on Carolina Hardcore Ecstasy. Now, if I can get my hands on a number one disc the experience will be perfect!

Some of the later 'flashes' to zappa solos had me double-taking at who was exactly was playing (a testament to the recorded FZ solos sound quality and DZ's chops.)

I have to say some of the peices also had a 'new beauty' that had escaped me before. (Some of the musical passages of 'brown shoes' for instance.)

After being a (obsessive) FZ fan since '94 getting to finally hear the music played live (and so tightly) was something I'll remember for the rest of this life (and inbetwix the future ones.)

Thank you ZPZ Band, this was a STELLAR performance.
* Please commit this band/setlist to a Future DVD/CD and release it on itunes so the 'kids' can get to it!

P.S. Compared to what I heard on the wonderful new DVD the concert had a great punchy, fat, kinda compressed sound and I LOVED IT! (Almost like Guitar Hero?) It brought new life to the peices. Please consider mixing the LIVE DVD/CD like this!

thank you D for keeping the flame alive. i brought some fresh meat to the show to blow there mind  as i have done since the mid 70's. I tried to warn of the experience he was about to witness but as you know there is no way to warn someone of such an out of body experience than to be in the middle of you and the crew ripping it up so tight it dosen't seem possible see you next year with some more virgin minds to blow
