Good Grief! Tonight's ZPZ was by far the best of the five shows I have seen/heard thus far. Where to begin ... 1st off Scheila as 'Mary' during Wet T-Shirt and Packard Goose (Music is the best!) 'bout made me wet 'em! Two Words ... KING KONG! I danced myself silly to G-Spot Tornado and Mr. Dweez, thanks for acknowledging my requests for Ya Hozna (great story by the way) ... Big Swifty and again, congrats to you and your new slightly enlarged family! What else can I say about the fabulous aural elixir that the guys and gal served up tonight? The end jam (during Willie Da Pimp or maybe Cosmic Debris) when Dweez and Ms. Gonzales faced off was an absolute highlight! So was the Moog® guitar solo ... it did produce some funky sounds! I hope this concert shows up in a purchasable form one day … Mr. Travers, thanks for all … enjoy the DVDs and I will see you all in Charlotte in August and then back for the two-night stand in Raleigh this fall. P.S. ... I hope you all know how important your work in ZPZ is ... to know Frank's music is being treated with such love and care is, for me, the most important thing about your rockin' teenage combo ... I know Joe and Dweezil know how important it is ... to me, other than say Robert Fripp and Brian Wilson, Frank is the music that drives me to get up in the mornin' ... it may sound like rhetoric or that i am blowin' smoke up your collective hinder-holes ... but, just like the guy from Iraq that gave DZ his dog tags, Frank's music is the only aural balm that will soothe me ... be it with the LSO, with Flo -n- Eddie, the Wazoo combo or just when FZ is soloing ... [aside: take a listen to Watermelon in Easter Hay or St. Etienne] THIS IS THE CLASSICAL MUSIC OF THE 21st CENTURY!

ZPZ is a show that is not to be missed. Thank you for playing Raleigh NC and we are counting on the return visit! I am particularly happy with the song choices, the musicianship and the band chemisty. With such an awesome body of work (lots of songs to pull from - as referenced by Dweezil), ZPZ is able to create a powerful set that flows amazingly well. A broad range of FZ's work was represented, with a nice lump of material from Joe's Garage, which was particulary enjoyable. Having seen Frank only 1 time in Philly in '88, I don't recall hearing any of this material. Ray White and Dweezil were amazing on Lucille and Wet T-Shirt was executed with perfection, including drummer extrodinaire, Joe Travers. I stood front row with my 14 year old son in front of Scheila and Ray. He has been into Frank for a while, and was also blown away, with the You are What You Is and Sheik Yerbouti material being some of his favorite. Ray was so cool, high-fiving my son and another younger kid up front. He was having a great time and in awesome voice. Very nice having Ray in the lineup and hearing his version of some of the tunes, like City of Tiny Lights. Scheila was pure energy and she just ROCKED! Her sax solo on King Kong elicited one of the biggest crowd reactions. Her virtuosity and love of the music shined as she stretched the boundaries of the Alto. Her vocals, keys and dance moves were amazing, as well. Dweezil's solos were a high point. There were so many good solos, that it would be hard to nail down a favorite, but the Joe's Garage material stood out. I also loved Flakes/Broken Hearts and the 74 band stuff couldn't have been played better. St. Alphonzo would be proud! Aaron, Pete, Billy and Jamie also need to be mentioned. Every one of these players is top-notch. Do yourself a favor and support this band and music. As a long-time Frank fan, I couldn't be happier with the quality and care that has gone into the most important task of representing the legacy of Zappa's music. This show is etched in my mind as one of the best I have seen. THANK YOU DWEEZIL and ALL! Can't wait for Charlotte, NC!

Dweezil,

I first saw you live in Munich 1982 with Frank, and you could really play then. Frank's music has been a huge part of my life since that time, so it was like a homecoming to see Zappa Plays Zappa live in Raleigh last night. Ray still cracks me up with his antics, and his vocals are awesome! I really appreciate the level of musicianship in this band - I know it took a lot of work to prepare. I especially enjoyed your playing, and it inspires me to keep playing. I'm a fan for life.

Please make good on plans to return to Raleigh!

Thanks,
--C2

Fri. the 13th has always been a lucky day for me. last night's show was no exception. I have been a Zappa fan since the early 70's but have never been to a live show. ZPZ was fantastic. I heard songs I knew a little, some I knew every lyric and measure and some I'd never heard before. Dweezil and the band talked of coming back, I hope so. With so many tunes to choose from ZPZ can last for years and always be an absolute joy to hear and see. Bongo Fury is one of several Zappa albums that I know by heart. I want to thank the band for playing Carolina Hard Core Ecstasy. See ya next time

WOW!! Freakin WOW! Unbelievable show!! Great set-list--including the ode to NC-- "Carolina Hardcore...." --as Dweezil and Scheila both posted in their blogs---panties and all. I was fortunate enough to stand right in front of Dweezil and witness some incredible guitar playing all night long. The entire band was on fire---truly a superb band of musicians---I got a chance to talk to Joe, Jaime, Billy and Dweezil afterward and they were all most gracious and accomodating.(Scheila--I looked for you too... where were you??? '' Dweezil was most accessible despite being mobbed--poor guy, still suffering from new-dad syndrome(lack of sleep) and a miserable cold to boot--he took time for everybody. Bless you!
I made it a point to tell Dweezil how much we really appreciate what he's doing--I was never fortunate enough to ever see Frank live during his lifetime and found myself near tears several times during the show last night--cause I never thought that I would be able to hear Franks music live---now I have !!!!! I am already looking forward to the Charlotte show next month--maybe I'll meet Scheila then????! By the way GREAT set list!!! I missed "Peaches" ---but not enough to detract from the show!!! See ya'll next month....... Sincerely, Mr Bill :D

PS--Ditto on the youth of the crowd--my 42 year -old self was crammed on the front row between a 14 and a 19 year old!!! Big ups to those two for being such smart young guys with great musical taste!!

zpz was beyond words. having seen frank multiple times throughout his career i was overjoyed to see that the zappa genius remains in our world. the musicians on stage are no doubt at the top of their game and amazingly tight. totally unbelievable. (however, i did miss black napkins-a personal favorite). the zappa family should take great pride in maintaining the dream and reality of frank zappa and his musical insight and genius.
my 16 yo son had prior commitments but he and his guitar playing friends are definitely going the next time zpz gets close so they can witness the beauty and skill of dweezil and the talented band. i'm sure that they will grow musically and personally from the encounter.
thanks to the zappa family and especially dweezil for making this friday the 13th only unlucky for the people not priviledged enough to see the show in raleigh n.c. i have seen 100's of shows the last 35 years and zpz tour has jumped rightfully to the top 10 at least.
THANKS. jack barkley

Sorry for the late post/thank-you... weather in Cedar Rapids...added to my hang-over of sorts...but anyway...after a tedious flight into St. Louis then to Raleigh with an hour to spare I arrived @ the Lincoln. This allowed me to score a spot nxt to the lady in the hat with the "loose" panties. After being a part of the 1st show of the 08 tour...Friday the 13th was explosive! The band was on fire and it showed w/ the long(er) solos by all... I felt the crowd was also amazing...Raleigh knows how to party!
I would like to thank Dweezil for his kindness as he signed anything he was handed...with a sincere smile/interest...
I hope can make another show on this tour.... this Friday night will definitely be a tab bit boring... oh I have the DVD:wink:
Thanks,
George Burrows

First-- Dear Dweezil & Co: I will come see you play as long as you continue to tour. I was never able to see Frank Zappa play live, and I'm very happy to have seen ZPZ twice now. You folks are clearly having a blast playing this brilliant music.

Hi zappa fans! I was at the Raleigh show with my older brother, and I can only echo the glowing praise already posted as far as the performance is concerned...however, can I just mention sound for a moment, please?

I love loud music. Love it. I've rocked to Soundgarden, Quiet Riot, Primus, and (loudest of all) Helmet. I was lucky enough to see those bands in various venues, all of which had sound levels appropriate for the space. Not so with ZPZ in Raleigh, unfortunately.

Why is it that some of the people who do live sound can't hear? By the time they got to 'Bamboozled by Love', it was nearly intolerable. I had failed to bring earplugs, because I'd never been to the Lincoln Theatre, and I rather naively assumed that is was a theatre-- maybe not as grand as the Warner where I saw ZPZ in DC a couple of years ago, but something with seats, decent acoustics, etc. Dweezil's white strat was making the floor rumble during the verses in 'Bamboozled', and I don't mean in a good way. I was about 15 feet from the stage, and I circulated a bit, and things improved only marginally.

The poor sound didn't ruin the show for me, but it made it a somewhat frustrating experience. Next time I'll bring earplugs. :?

Several things I realized during the show ...

1) I don't know a tenth of Frank Zappa's catalog. (Gonna change that!)

2) It didn't matter, and I didn't care. The music (was, and) IS the best!

3) The performance was absolutely incredible. That band was so tight, it squeaked when it walked! Excellent musicians performing excellent music ... can it get any better?

4) The audience was proof positive that Frank Zappa's music isn't time-specific ... else how would you explain the wide age range?

5) NO ONE could keep still during the show ... it ROCKED that hard!

I fully intend to see ZPZ again, as often as I can. It was the BEST show I've seen in years ... and I told Dweezil so when I got his autograph and shook his hand. (Call me "drooling fanboi" ... I don't care about that, either.)

Thanks again to Dweezil and the band for a fantastic show!

Best,

James
