Did you attend this ZPZ show at Palua de la Musica?

Dweezil and the band love reading your reviews.

Please do not post in this thread if you did not attend the show.

The fan review

Finally we got the pleasure and privilege to have ZPZ in Barcelona after previous failed attemtps. The band was impressive in delivering such a challenging complex music with such a skillfull, technically perfect and tight performance. A magnificent work has been made disecting every track and playing it back so faithfully well, Congratulations to Dweezil and all the involved! The musicians seems to really enjoy with the music they play and it transmits the feel of happiness to the audience. It has been one of those shows that leave you emotionally high

The sound was good but has its unbalanced moments. Anyhow, it purposed well in transmiting the feels. The good acoustic of the small Palau helped to enjoy every detail of the music at a very appropiate and moderate air pressure level

Some comment about the venue: it was my first show on this beautiful gem of modernist architecture and I was blown away by the look and sound of that impressive little Palau. Surely ZPZ has and will play in venerable magic places around the world (Royal Albert Hall come to head) but this one will probably remain on the top of the top. One sample of the magic made my third row ticket a first row , literally touching the stage, no real first and second row, Scheila, Ray and Dweezil were soooo near........ But even farest seats are at a human-size distance that improves greatly the overall experience, it was a perfect place for a hardcore fan base concert it was, if you expected to add new generations of listeners you'll have to try again, today they were at some of the various alternatives

The Critic review

Some complaints about the setlist. I appreciate Dweezil skills on guitar and technically maybe he can be considered even better than Frank's best, but as an "air sculptor" DZ lacks some of the magic that made the good FZ solos so memorable (he made boring forgetable ones too, sorry, let me say). But if the intensive soloing has the price of missing the theoretically unavoidable (from a fan point of view) St. Alphonzo's suite, Zomby woof or Peaches in regalia (to name some) then some considerations about priorites should be made. If I undertand correctly, one of the big goals of ZPZ is to deliver Frank's music to new generations, and extensive soloing was only a part of FZ legacy, and not the easiest one. If you want to win new fans, you should do it with the absolute classics that Frank left us to enjoy for ages (don't misunderstand me, I'm not talking about Bobby Brown, I'm talking about Montana) Please, consider how young new fans would be shocked by Frank's best compositions and how easily they can be bored by too much soloing

As seems to be usual (according the forums), Dweezil was very friendly and patient at the end of the show signing every signature and possing for every photo he was asked for.. Only Scheila helped him a little in fans treatment, the rest of the band was absolutely disappeared at that point. I had the cover of Having a bad day LP (yes, the vinyl one, remember the days?) signed and had the chance to talk with him a few phrases, and in a final impulse I kissed his hand, he seemed surprised and a little embarased, What a lovely guy!

About his next visit to Europe , for what I understood, seems there will be a Euro Fall Tour, but Spain is skipped, maybe because the relatively poor attendances of this two concerts. But I hope they will come back in some less competitive dates (there were soooo many alternatives that Friday....) I'm sure they'll have a new chance to try to arrive to a new generation of listeners, although here in Spain will be hard to increase the relatively small fan base, there are some handicaps, like language barrier, that will make a little more difficult the goal. Anyway, please Dweezil, try to come back, you can count I'll repeat

After Josep’s thorough analysis, I’d like to spell out my mixed feelings about the concert. Though I’ve been a Zappa fan for many years (since 1978 or so), and he played in Barcelona three times, for a number of reasons I’ve never had the opportunity of actually enjoying a FZ concert live. I’ve seen and heard a lot of live recorded material, but never got to the real thing. I take it that last night I get the closest thing to a FZ concert which is possible today, and I was overwhelmed by the tremendous bunch of great songs superbly performed, with lots of musical talent and creative energy. But I’m devastated as well, ‘cause now I really understand what I missed in ’79, ‘84 and ’88. I also regret not being able to express my gratitude to Dweezil and the band for providing one of the most intense musical experiences of my entire life.

So I take this opportunity to say thanks much to Dweezil, Ray, Aaron, Scheila, Pete, Jamie, Joe and Billy. Despite the (minor) problems with the sound it was a superlative show, and you are one of the most exciting and gifted bands I’ve ever seen. Please come back!

To FZ, wherever you are, thanks for delivering your work, my favourite masterpiece of the twentieth century, and for leaving to the world another musical genius generous enough to keep this work alive in the twentieth-one.

In a more critical vein, I cannot but agree with Josep in that I would have loved to hear, i.e., Whipping post I mean Montana, but I think DZ has done it somewhere else, along with other FZ all-time classics like Andy, Black Napkins, Peaches in Regalia, the glorious A side of the Apostrophe’s album... I think we should give the guy a break and let him make his own choices, he’s working hard and doing great in coping with his father music. Besides, some stuff is hard to recreate without FZ’s gift for improvisating hilarious situations onstage (I’m thinking again of Whipping post floss or Room service at Helsinki). It’s not easy to become a brilliant stand-up comedian in addition to a great musician overnight.

Fantastic concert in a unique place, the Palau de Concerts. The audience (900 people more and less) was happy when the concert off.
Thanks Dweezil an other people of the band, and Ray of course. We want more! See you next year.

The concert was fantastic, and it demonstrates that DZ is totally capable of playing the music of his father. But I don't think it didn't attract new generations in Barcelona. I was probably the youngest that went to the concert on his own, I'm 17 years old...
I missed some classics (you know: Zoot Allures, Watermelon in Esastern Hay, Peaches en Regalia...). The guitar contest was chaotic (I still don't understand how it went) but I have to remark that the first person that played on stage was amazingly good...
The G-Spot Tornado encore was a great surprise, this new version was good, even with a reduced number of musicians...
In summary: fantastic, but it seemed to be aimed at "Zappa fundamentalists" (sorry for that words...)... But if DZ comes back, I'll sure be there again.

PS: Incredible drummer...

The first theme was "Treacherous Cretins".

Good show but I enjoyed more the previous day in Madrid with a monster Cosmik Debris at the end & without guitar raffle in the middle of King Kong.

Francesc, you forgot about Badalona in Oct 1974 (which I missed)

According to ZPZ, I am a die hard fan when it comes to FZ music (and view of life). Dweezil, you can always count on me. Nice show in Palau de la Musica.

Regards.

I was at this show and I must say it was a little bizarre. the music was tight, and really on, but the crowd remained glued to their seats. I got the feeling that the band was not prepared for the lack of emotive response from the crowd...maybe even a little disappointed. i distinctly remember that in song 4 or 5 of the show, DZ did a very UNcharacteristic solo which involved playing like 5 notes, holding each one for like 15 seconds at a time. Up until that point, boy, he was playing hundreds of notes all over the fretboard. i got the feeling he was just like "f*** it. why play my heart out. ain't nobody dancing". having said that, he did recover form and continue jamming, but i just felt like given the hot start they got off to, that show could have been more special if the band would have gotten more feedback. anybody else get that feeling?

BTW, I was on the floor, back row, on the main aisle. nobody behind me but techies. From what I could gather, I was the only one on my feet dancing the entire show.

A man was hit by a cab in the street. He was brought to the hospital. His wife who was standing up by his bed, said to the doctor: "I think that he is very ill." "I am afraid that he is dead."said the doctor, nike air max tn
