Dweezil, et al.:
It's taken me four days of reflecting and ruminating to come to grips with what I witnessed Wednesday night in Wilmington. I had the chance to see Frank live several times in high school (1987-88 vintage) but sadly was never able to make a show. For years I've kicked myself for missing out (who knew FZ's touring was coming to an end???)
Now as a HUGE FZ fan, I DO already own the ZPZ DVD/CD set and am constantly amazed with the performances, song selection, etc., but I figured there was NO WAY you'd be able to outdo what was 1- and 0'ed onto the DVD media. Boy, was I wrong.
The setlist was refreshing; only a minuscule amount of 'retreads' from the DVD set (horrible way to put it, I know), the performances were inspired, the execution nearly flawless (I thought Ray was clamming up Willie The Pimp with the vocal phrasing, but when he did it all the way through the song, I finally caught on to the different arrangement -- I'm a little s...l...o..w...)
Very rarely, at magical moments of live music performances do I get to experience a state of true bliss -- chills, a ear-to-ear grin, utter joy at what I'm witnessing. I might get 2-3 fleeting moments like that at a show of one of my favorite artists, but Wednesday night, I think I was there for about 2.5 hours.
THANK YOU Dweezil, for endeavoring to keep Frank's musical legacy alive and kicking, and for exposing it to several new generations of potential rabid FZ fans. What you've done to metamorphisize yourself as a musician, a band leader, and as a guitarist is nothing short of amazing. The DZ of 'Confessions' is not the guy I saw Wednesday (and I LOVE 'Confessions' and your playing on it, truth be told!)
THANK YOU to the entire band (and of course, the phenomenal Ray White) for a performance that was inspired, inspiring, emotional, joyous, and mind-blowing on all levels. I've been a 'musician' for 20+ years (a certain someone and his 'Flex-ible' album bit me with the guitar bug) and I could never aspire to the level of musical genius you've all brought to interpreting Frank's work. You were a delight to witness, and from the sheer enjoyment evident on all of your faces throughout the show, to master such pieces must be what you as performers aspire to.
Now, Pete, if you're reading this, we need to talk about the gig with Hanson... (I hope they paid well, at least!)
With any luck I can juggle a little of our family vacation in Long Island and make it down to the Westbury show on the 8th! I can always fish later on - ZPZ only comes around every so often!
