Wow!!! My first Frank show was in 77, and my first ZPZ show was 6/06, and I never missed a tour. Dweezil and company achieved the unachievable last night, in 2 short years they have mastered the master. Improving with every tour, DZ has come of age, playing solos (Inca Roads and Wet T-shirt Night especially)that were as good as FZ himself. This is not an easy thing for me to admit, but it is time to give credit where credit is due.
Joe Traver's drums on Packard Goose blew me away too. I always loved the percussion as Zappa comes out of the solo in the middle of the song, and Joe handled it with a pounding determination. The rest of the band NEVER missed thier mark either, and the Joe's Garage suite was a real highlight, using the original album recordings of Frank as the Central Scrutinizer. Does humor belong in music? Absolutely!
My favorite part of any Zappa show was always the guitar solos, watching Frank's left hand while listing to the notes was the only way to hear them all. I soon realized no one could ever duplicate that left hand, and therefore, Frank's distinct sound. All that has changed, Dweezil has his father's 'left hand', and that is the highest compliment I can possibly give.
These are just some brief observations of a very happy camper. After the show, with big grins on our faces, we all agreed that what we had seen, and heard, was undescribable.
Zappa Plays Zappa? Zappa IS Zappa!
