Did you attend this show at Kiva Auditorium in Albuquerque?

Dweezil and the band would love to read your reviews.

Please do not post in this thread if you did not attend the show.

Amazing Show!
I went skeptical of what I'd see, and was absolutely blown away! Of the 100's of concerts I've seen, this one is one of the very best!

The band was really tight and spot-on. Great job putting together a great bunch of musicians. I've never heard a band so tight and together before.
Sheila Gonzales steals the show! What a talent!

The show was well worth it, 3 hours of non-stop energy and music. I hope they come to our po-dunk town again.
Dweezil and the band even hung out and signed autographs afterward.

Setlist of what I can remember, in no particular order:

Peaches en Regalia
Carolina Hardcore
Uncle Remus
Montana
Cosmik Debris
I'm The Slime
Pygmy Twylyte
Joe's Garage
Wind Up Workin' In A Gas Station
Cheepnis

That's all I can remember off the top of my head. Hopefully someone can post an accurate list.

If you are on the fence about seeing this show, buy a ticket!

Wow wow wow. Music is the best and this music is the very best, especially when it's live. ZpZ just gets better and better. I dragged some friends and family along, and Dweezil created some new Zappa fans. My wife's first comment was, "You didn't tell me he was cute!" (I didn't know).
Thanks a ton Dweezil. Pleeeeease come back!

Albuquerque set list and notes:

Opening improv - Dweezil conducts band with hand signals
Peaches en Regalia
My Guitar Wants to Kill your Mama
** Ray White comes out **
City of Tiny Lights
Montana (w/ FZ video)
Carolina Hard-core Ecstasy
I'm the Slime
Cheepnis
Advance Romance (Ray solo, Ray & DZ guitar duel, DZ solo)
** DZ introduces some "hard stuff" from Freak Out! as 40 years old and still relevant **
Son of Suzy Creamcheese>Brown Shoes Don't Make It>America Drinks & Goes Home (with Scheila serving drinks to the boys)
Dumb All Over (w/ FZ video)
What's New in Baltimore?
Pygmy Twylite (DZ calls it the "Quaalude Thunder" version)
** DZ asks for non-FZ phrases from audience, gets "Weasels Ripped my Flesh" - duh that won't work; "a dog who lives with chickens that doesn't know how to cluck", "swim fins", "talk about Gargamel", "I've heard enough", and on his own decides on "I'm not gonna lie to you, that sounds delicious" **
Dupree's Paradise (everyone gets a "body commecial", with Billy's oral congas riffing on "Gargamel" and "Azriel" and Ray's Washington inspired vocal improv around "I've heard enough" and "I'm not gonna lie to you, that sounds delicious")
Uncle Remus
Willie the Pimp
Joe's Garage
Wind Up Workin' in a Gas Station
San Ber'dino
The Illinois Enema Bandit

encore:
Cosmik Debris (w/ FZ)
G-spot Tornado
Muffin Man (w/ FZ)

I think I'll quit my job, buy a van, and hit the road to follow the band. Hey, it's a way of life.

Fantastic show! Frank could not have assembled a more talented band of musicians. In this group of outstanding musicians, Scheila stood out. What stage presence! What talent! What fun to watch! Ray White was as marvelous as he was in the early 80’s when I last saw Frank. I thought Ed Mann was the best percussionist I would ever see, Billy Hulting is right there with him. Jamie Kime needs a few more solos, his solo on Dupree’s Paradise was amazing.
The whole band was exceptionally tight and really pulled off Frank’s music well. Dweezil effortlessly shredded through some of Frank’s toughest licks. It is obvious that he has spent a lot of time honing his skills.
A great setlist, the highlights for me were Brown Shoes Don’t Make It and the solos in Dupree’s Paradise. The video presence of Frank was fabulous! Frank’s stage presence throughout the show was the only thing missing. Given that we can’t get that back, this was the next best thing. Thank you for coming to Albuquerque, please come back.

Thanks Zappa and Trust,

Thanks again,

Dweezil your not just pulling it off and succeding, you've really come into your own. FANTASTIC!
Aaron (hardly saw ya behind rock bassist pete,, nice sneeky trumpet Aaron),
Peter Griffin (kudos rocker (thunes take that)),
The beautiful Scheila Gonzalez (will you be walkin to your car alone later, i'll be waiting..heres my number xxx-xxxx actualy what's yours??),

billy hulting, jamie kime, joe travers and ray (Thumbs up)

Salute..... I bow my Jazz Party Hat Discharge to ya's, BRO..

Great show.!!

The turn out at Albuquerque was a little littltle weak. (maybe? marty and bill were debating green or red. Maybe the elevation. Maybe everyone was drunk and to busy driving the wrong way down the freeways, taking out the nice sensible family from their church)

You'ss definetly were in rock mode for a bit.??(kinda scary. ohhhow ?x!)

Many highlightes. The band was great.!; Completely, kicked ass.

I bought a shirt (dumb all over) walked in and u'tes played dumb all over.

great show....
Hope the band is having a great time. Had my binocolors, handed them to like minded folks and no one stole them.

P.S. how do you all like my use of puncuation and speeling.

We lost Frank way too early, THANK YOU DWEEZEL FOR BRINGING HIM BACK!

I especially agree that Scheila Gonzales steals the show...also, at times the harmonies locked in so tightly that it gave me goose-bumps. Great sound, great songs...this band is m*th&rf^ck!n' tight! WOW.

Come back soon! (ABQ loves you)

At the Kiva - did I ever.

I am a fifty something physician and surgeon. I decided some 41 years ago to go see Frank. Yes, I do own an original copy of Absolutely Free. Dweezil jamming with his Dad just about took me out. Thanks guys - it will not go forgotten.

ZPZ is the real deal.... is it not. Dweezil was well 'wood-shedded' on FZ styling and guitar phrasiology! Agree Guitar player #2 did not get enuff solo action, but the one he got reflects the Baked Potato (Studio City CA) and M.I. Holywood fusion Guit-riffing influence. javascript:emoticon('')
Shocked

Dweezil- did you always call your dad "Frank" though? javascript:emoticon('')
Laughing

I saw Frank play in Albuquerque in October of 1980and October of 1981 and in Santa Fe in 1984. One of my prized posessions is a videotape that very few people have ever seen, it's a hand-held video taken from stage with a board audio feed (with FZ's permission.) It's of two songs from the 1980 show in Albuquerque, one song is Jimmy Carl Black singing "Harder than Your Husband." (Jimmy was living in Albuquerque at the time. It was the first time (and possibly the only time) Jimmy had been on stage with Frank since the Mothers.) The second song is Ike Willis doing "Bamboozled by Love." *

I was a disc jockey back in the late 60s at a progressive FM station and did my small part in introducing Albuquerque to FZ and the Mothers of Invention. After that, I spent over 30 years as an audio engineer, doing primarily FOH at live concerts. I won't go into how, but the FZ show in 1980 literally changed my life professionally.

I went to last night's show with no expectations. All I knew was that I was going to hear Dweezil play some of his dad's music. Turns out that my seat was smack-dab in the center of the front row. The almost three-hour show was absolutely astonishing. It was vastly more than Dweezil and his band playing a tribute to his dad, DZ actually seems to have taken Frank's music to the "next level." I wouldn't have believed that was possible, but I witnessed it myself. Everybody in the band is absolutely "world class" and DZ is in a class by himself. I was particularly touched watching him play along with his dad on the video screen. Emotionally, that's got to be an incredibly difficult thing to do. Having just lost my father several years ago, it was pretty emotional for me to watch it happen. Special moments like that just don't happen at a music concert.

Between the band and the audience, I think everybody there was having as much fun as they could have with their clothes on. I'm checking the tour dates and will probably travel around the country a bit to see this band perform again. Last night was one of the top three concerts I have ever seen and heard. The other two also had the name "Zappa" associated with them.

If you're reading this considering whether to attend a Zappa Plays Zappa show. Just buy the tickets and go.

-----------------------------
* (Frank videotaped most of his shows and there is probably a much higher-quality "official" recording of this show, but if DZ wants a copy of what I have, I'd be more than happy to give it to him.)

Son of God Tour, Indeed.

Real Music played by Real Musicians. What an utter delight in every way.

So many on other pages of this forum have said what amounts to, “When Frank died, so should his music have died. It can never be as good as when Frank did it, so don’t do it at all. Don’t praise the current musicians playing his music because we should only remember those who played it in the past.”
Of course, we old fans will never forget the past or all the great musicians who played with Frank. No, it won’t be the same as when Frank was alive; but this band represents the future for this music. ZPZ has breathed new life into something I believed was lost forever. This experience has been very emotional for me because I am reliving feelings long forgotten. I found myself as excited as when I went to see Frank for the first time.

I had the privilege of seeing Frank at Johnson Gym in Albuquerque in 1980 and 1981. Ray White was there both times, so now all of my live Zappa experiences have included the Great Ray White.

I was finally able to share this with my wife, who never was really into Frank’s music, merely tolerant of my obsession. Afterwards I asked her what was her favorite part., and she said, “The whole thing.” While I can’t say that she will be a new Frank Zappa fan, she will be a ZPZ fan.

Can’t wait for the DVD of last year’s tour. How about a CD of this year’s tour?

After the show, when I went up to the stage to get Dweezil’s autograph, I wanted to say so much to him, but being the idiot that I am, all I could only manage to say over all of the other fast talkers trying to get his attention was “Thank you...”
Again I say to Dweezil and the ZPZ band:
Thank You Thank You Thank You.
All the best to you and your family.
Music is the best, and so are you.
:D Come back soon.

Had a really great time at the show. Sang my heart out. A big thank you to DZ and the band. Once saw FZ in Santa Fe in 1984 (at least I think that was the year.) The Kiva show brought back some powerful memories and formed some new ones that will be hard to forget. I'm really looking forward to seeing the show again, if not this go around, maybe the next ZPZ tour.

Me too, and I met a woman... who told me she felt like it was the Wizard of OZ seeing Frank come down and play. I had read a review of the show recently and knew it was coming, but still what a great thing to see. Joe's Garage was great with the added Central Scrutinizer ending. What an incredible show. I already have my Denver tickets. Dweezil, I'm sorry for yelling stuff at you when you very politely signing my ticket stubs. I'm sorry for yelling. Anyways. I loved the show and loved the performances, all I was trying to say was, you guys were great, even better than last time!! And Thank You. So, thanks Dweezil and the boys and thanks Ray for rapping a few seconds after the show on the sidewalk. Great stuff. See you guys soon...
Dean eee

P.S. To the woman who I met and went out with again later after the show. you know who you are. Ryhmes with Penny?......
e mail me....
