Available July 17 Via Zappa Records/UMe
Los Angeles – May 26, 2026 – In his trailblazing and incredibly prolific career, artist, composer and all-around musical pioneer Frank Zappa released 62 albums during his lifetime, both as a solo artist and with the Mothers of Invention and the Mothers. Coupled with more than 70 posthumous releases since his death in 1993, figuring out where to begin exploring Zappa’s vast, genre-leaping catalog can be daunting. Most recently, archival release No. 134, Zappa ’66 Vol. 1: Live At TTG Studios, arrived last week.
Cue ZAPPAtite – Frank Zappa’s Tastiest Tracks, a career-spanning collection of some of Zappa’s best-known and most beloved compositions, originally released in 2016 as a gateway into the visionary musician’s many sonic worlds. Originally available only on CD and digitally, ZAPPAtite now arrives on vinyl for the first time in celebration of its 10th anniversary.
The vinyl offerings include a 2LP set on black vinyl and a limited-edition 2LP color exclusive on pink swirl vinyl, both featuring a gatefold jacket and “menu” insert. Additionally, the CD will once again be available. ZAPPAtite will be released in all formats on July 17 via Zappa Records/UMe. Pre-order ZAPPAtite now:
Curated by Ahmet Zappa and Zappa Vaultmeister Joe Travers, ZAPPAtite collects 18 tracks ranging from Zappa’s early psychedelic rock beginnings to his avant-garde experimentation, jazz-rock explorations, symphonic suites and satirical send-ups. The collection serves as an inviting entry point into the more rock-oriented side of his expansive repertoire.
The album is divided into four courses — Appetizers, Entrées, Second Course and Desserts — and the food-centric theme carries throughout the artwork, which features Zappa in a diner on the cover, a tracklist designed like a menu and references to some of Zappa’s favorite foods.
“This isn’t a greatest hits album, as Frank didn’t really have ‘hits,’ per se, nor is it a ‘best of,’ since it would be impossible to fit so much awesome onto one disc,” said Ahmet Zappa upon the album’s original release in 2016. “It’s a veritable smorgasbord of musicality for the curious and a buffet of favorites for the fans.”
Kicking off with the one-two punch of “I’m The Slime” and “Dirty Love” from Zappa’s 1973 Gold-certified breakthrough Over-Nite Sensation, the collection quickly introduces listeners to Zappa’s eclecticism, irreverent wit and signature innuendo-filled lyricism. The songs meld polyrhythmic psychedelic rock with heavy funk while showcasing the inventive musicality that defined his work.
The Appetizers portion also includes the GRAMMY-nominated disco satire “Dancing Fool” as well as “Trouble Every Day” from the Mothers of Invention’s groundbreaking 1966 debut, Freak Out!, celebrating its 60th anniversary this year, and one Zappa’s best-known works, the beloved instrumental “Peaches En Regalia” from his classic 1969 solo breakthrough Hot Rats.
Entrées includes the controversial European smash “Bobby Brown Goes Down” from Zappa’s popular 1979 album Sheik Yerbouti; the enduring Top 40 hit “Valley Girl,” featuring his then-14-year-old daughter Moon Unit affecting a valley girl “gag-me-with-a-spoon” patois, from 1982’s Ship Arriving Too Late to Save a Drowning Witch; and the surreal title track “Joe’s Garage” from the 1979 album of the same name.
Second Course offers the waggish blues rocker “Cosmik Debris” alongside the humorous “Don’t Eat The Yellow Snow,” two standouts from one of Zappa’s most commercially accessible albums, 1974’s Apostrophe (’) and also highlights Zappa’s musical virtuosity and singular live performances with the comedic “Titties & Beer” from the 1978 live album Zappa In New York;
Desserts brings the sonic feast to its climax with the frenetic Synclavier-fueled “G-Spot Tornado” from 1986’s Jazz From Hell; the anti-drug screed “Cocaine Decisions” from 1983’s The Man From Utopia; and “Zoot Allures,” the atmospheric instrumental showcasing some of Zappa’s most electrifying guitar work, from 1976’s Zoot Allures. It beautifully concludes with a performance of “Strictly Genteel” featuring the London Symphony Orchestra, the epic orchestral-rock piece that originally served as the grand finale to Zappa’s surrealist 1971 film 200 Motels.
Frank Zappa’s music defied categorization, constantly pushing boundaries while blending virtuoso musicianship, sharp satire and fearless experimentation into a singular artistic vision. Spanning more than three decades of groundbreaking recordings, ZAPPAtite offers both longtime fans and curious newcomers an expertly curated journey through the many facets of Zappa’s expansive catalog — from razor-sharp rock anthems and jazz-infused instrumentals to orchestral ambition and subversive humor — reaffirming why his work continues to inspire and challenge listeners around the world.
